For a series that excels at telling its own story, Star Wars Rebels has done a damn fine job of linking to the old trilogy of movies so far. Thanks to a pair of episodes that saw the smoothest smuggler in the galaxy Lando Calrissian appear and a younger Princess Leia take charge of a volatile situation, it has been a treat to some fan favourite characters connect the dots in a galaxy far, far away. But for season 3 of Star Wars Rebels? Expect more connections to be made, maybe even to future movies.
Speaking to Moviefone, executive producer Simon Kinberg detailed the upcoming third season’s attempt to seek balance in the cameo Force:
What’s lovely is, obviously, we’ve brought in characters from Clone Wars in the second season, and we keep sort of bringing characters from the original movies and sort of deepening the relationships between our core characters, the Ghost crew. So it’s trying to balance the two different things, like the original cast from the first season with Clone Wars, with characters from the original movies, and maybe even feeding into future movies.
Now there’s the money-shot. Star Wars Rebels has seen plenty of big faces pop up the second season, from Grand Admiral Tarkin and Maul, to big daddy Darth Vader himself. Clone Wars veteran Saw Gerrrera is one of those characters who’ll be fed into the Star Wars cinematic universe in the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with Forest Whitaker playing that role.
That’s the kind of future I foresee for future characters, and I’m perfectly happy with that after the rock-solid second season of Star Wars Rebels. A third season is already on the way, as Star Wars Rebels will debut that the third time is the charm at Star Wars Celebration London in just two weeks. Hopefully by then, we’ll see just what the future holds for the crew of the Ghost.
