Lots of rumours have been swirling about the Underworld reboot/sequel/rebooquel (© Kervyn) the last couple of months with Darryn first reporting on a “soft reboot” of the franchise centering on Eve (India Eisley – no relation to the spaceport), the hybrid daughter of Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Michael (Scott Speedman). Nick then ruined it for everybody (thanks Nick!) by telling us that instead of a reboot with Kate Beckinsale, the next Underworld movie would be a spin-off lead by Theo James (Divergent) who previously appeared in 2012’s Underworld: Awakening as David, Selene’s © henchpire (I can make up words too). Turns out everyone was right, but there’s even more.
In a brief video interview with IGN Underworld director Len Wiseman (who happens to be Beckinsale’s husband) confirmed that not only are they developing a full sequel starring Beckinsale as Selene, but also a spin-off featuring supporting characters from previous installments in the franchise (Evolution, Rise of the Lycans & Awakening) and a TV series. He did, however, concede he didn’t know which of these would appear first, if in fact any/all of them move out of development and into production. No details were given regarding possible storylines.
Screenrant are also floating the idea that Wiseman hinted at using the Underworld franchise to kick start a shared universe, which is very popular in Hollywood right now following Marvel’s major success with the concept. They suggested merging with I, Frankenstein which would be pretty cool as I think they’d fit together nicely. What would you like to see?
