What is going on in this trailer for The Lighthouse?

Some films can be hard to watch because of their intense subject matter, graphic violence or sense of terror. There re also films designed to get a strong reaction from its audience, but that many people wouldn’t be willing to give their time to in the first place. Robert Eggers new film, The Lighthouse is one of those, as the film explores the themes of isolation and madness in a small lighthouse in the 1890s.

Starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattison, The Lighthouse is one of those movies that doesn’t look like it’s going to be easy to watch. It’s slow-moving, doesn’t appear to have much of a story and doesn’t appear particularly scary for a supposed horror. However, there is still something deeply unsettling about it that makes even watching this new trailer for the movie hard to get through.

This movie looks completely unhinged. From close-ups of both characters looking increasingly distressed and the pair shouting “What?” at each other, its hard to make sense of what is going on, but that is likely to be part of the magic of this film which will likely play on you as you try to figure it out all too.

I don’t expect this film to be a massive box office draw when it releases on October 18th as it is clearly made with a very niche audience in mind. It’s far too slow and requires a level of investment and concentration that is more than the average escapist is willing to offer. For those that want to see two actors in their prime and don’t mind the frustrating pace, it could certainly be rewarding. Or unnerving.

It’s simple. Green Goblin and Batman are having mental breakdowns.

I’ve been watching The Terror, one of these slow burn, oppressive atmosphere, creepy more than terrifying but excellent shows. Highly recommend if the darkness in this trailer gets you
