Why hoping Destiny will fail is idiotic

3 min read

Earlier this week  our friends over at egmr.net posted an article, with author Caveshen claiming that he wants Destiny to fail for the good of all gamers. Now I’m all for winding people up to get a discussion going but Destiny failing will truly help no one – except perhaps some whiny indie who thinks he is better than everyone else.

The essence of the Destiny fail article is that Activision are reportedly budgeting $500 million for Destiny which if you use some grade 2 maths means they need to sell 16 million copies before even breaking even. The author obviously doesn;t want Destiny to fail because it’s a bad game, but rather suggests that any company investing this much in any game is a troubling indicator for the industry.

That, however, forgets that this budget is spread over a 10 year period with Activision promising to continue to invest in the game and its future and to continue bringing new content to gamers as the game progresses. However even if that wasn’t the case then the idea of a massive company investing half a billon dollars into a game isn’t a bad thing. It means that a company out there, and their shareholders, believe that the industry is healthy enough to entrust a massive amount of money with and that they truly believe they will be making a healthy profit on the other side.

Bobby Kotick hasn’t made the decision to invest this money by himself and trust me the people who are making this decision aren’t doing it to just make gamers happy. They have done the numbers and are taking a very calculated risk that this will end in a huge profit for the company and shareholders.

It also doesn’t mean fewer games will be made and smaller games will be ignored. There are still plenty of other publishers and companies such as EA, Ubisoft, 2K, Konami, Valve plus Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo who are all looking for that next great game to bring in profits.

The worst thing about Activision investing such a huge chunk in a single game and it succeeding is that the pressure will be taken off Call of Duty, Skylanders and World of Warcraft to keep the company strong. That,  in turn allow them to diversify more. You all complain about Call of Duty being a cut-and-paste of the last year and don’t for a second think that Activision doesn’t hear you. But when COD is one of their main incomes do you really think they can take a chance of changing the formula much?

Everyone who hates the Call of Duty model should be embracing Destiny and thanking Activision for showing they really do listen to people; this is the originality you have all been asking for. Appreciate it and stop hating the company just because they are successful. For those who don’t like shooters, well you have no place to complain really with Activision also releasing a slew of different games in other genres and they are also not your only option.

Anyone investing this amount of money in any industry should be applauded rather than having failure wished upon them. As a side note, I’m very worried Destiny won’t be fun, I haven’t had any hands on with the game yet so I’m hoping I’m wrong. I just have a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that it will be too intricate for casual gamers to pick up and enjoy.

They might just release it on PC a month or 2 after the console release.
That way both the hype and the feelings of abandonment and desire will be at there maximum.

          It’s a valid marketing strategy.
Wait until the console players have all said how amazing the game is and all the PC gamers are feeling disappointed that they can’t play it and then make a surprise announcement that it will be coming to PC.

Destiny will fail because it’s an online only MMO for consoles. It will do ok but it wont be like a massive success that GTA 5 was.

I’m waiting for the next Bungie game that will have a single player mode.

I hope Destiny does well because I like Bungie. I hope Destiny does bad because, fuck Activision.

Bungie has a cult following and Bungie is known for releasing good games. So Destiny should do well. 2 million, maybe 3 million copies sold, the way Destiny is getting promoted. But that might not be enough, aka Tomb Raider and Hitman.

oh i see, its only about you. so you liked the alpha and now everyone will like destiny even those with no internet. just because you didnt like halo doesnt mean that there are not millions of people who love halo and love bungie for not coping and pasting a new halo game.

I am a fan of Halo 1. Halo 2 meh, but looked good. Halo 3 meh but looked good and technically a real good game. If I look at Halo 1 then Halo 3 and now Destiny. I can not by mad at Bungie. Halo is meh but the games they create is always an improvement.

And then on the flip side, Call of Duty 4, 5, 6, 7 ect. Not the same standard at Bungie. Hate Halo all you like but there are reasons why Bungie gets so much love.

I am the only human in a first world country that will not allow the invasiveness of the on-line matrix into my home. An old school traditionalist who grew up before the answering machine was invented.

I learnt to enjoy my hobby of gaming even more off-line in order to escape the reality of life and that includes other humans.

It seems the modern generation are more than happy being wired up 24/7. Thank goodness the PS4 still allows one to play off-line. Probably the last generation to allow that.

I play online Fifa, I have never talked to any one of the gamers I played against. But playing Fifa’s off line mode becomes very repetitive, and I don’t have true gamer friends so can’t play with anyone else. I play online because it is more of a challenge, the same will be true for Destiny!!

Perfectly natural to be socially competitive. Its in our DNA.

While there are many things I’d like to see changed in the gaming industry a big game falling flat on it’s face isn’t really one of them, especially when it’s taking a chance & being different. That’ll just lead to more annual releases & sequel-itis.

Although I do think when it’s comes to actual innovation in game play you’re not going to see it originating with big publishers. It’ll come from smaller publishers or devs who have more to gain from taking a big chance.

Destiny does well, the industry follows suit. EA releases their contender as with BF called Fate and the entire gaming community moves from hating CoD to Destiny….

I have no qualm with Destiny, I hope it does well, I am incredibly skeptical on this whole 10 year plan, but I believe it can do well. I do however hate everything surrounding Destiny. egmr makes a great point that we’re being force fed hype and being told how to feel about the game. Believe the hype right?

Also “This is the originality you have all been asking for.” This is the furthest thing from originality that one can dream of.As a disclaimer Destiny is much more than my next statement, but it’s a space shooter…And before you jump down my throat, I know it does a lot of new and exciting things, but at the core, it’s a borderlands-esque space shooter

Oh I am glad that you decided to grace us with your online presence today…..
The point of the article was to show the article on egmr.net was purely just started to create friction and publicity for their site!! And that it is stupid to want Destiny to fail just because Activision is throwing a huge amount of money at it!!
If you are a true gamer then you would agree(hopefully) that we don’t want big investments in our industry to fail on the very first attempt because that would be bad!!

Has egmr ever badmouthed lazygamer? Ironically I didn’t even know about that site until today.

Investors would expect a return, and the budget should really be divided up into multiple games of the franchise. If you look at the amount of money invested in games, Destiny is at the top but GTA is second on the list and that’s just one of the games.

          • Jonah Cash

            June 25, 2014 at 13:27

Where were they badmouthed? They ran an article, another site picked up on the article, and had an opinion on it and they wrote their own article with their own opinion of it!!! That wasn’t the point of the article even; we’re not out to badmouth Egamer at all. They’re cool dudes. They made some points, Gavin disagreed with those points and wrote a rebuttal. That’s all.

          • Azhar Lorgat

            June 25, 2014 at 14:15

I’m all for rebuttal articles. But avoid referring to the original article like it’s an opinion collectively shared by all eGamer writers, and using a phrase like “awesome flamebait article” which obviously implies something negative about the writer’s intention. Gavin calls it a “perfectly reasonable opinion” in his comment above, but the article tells a different story.

Otherwise, fine with pretty much the rest. He’s entitled to his view, as is the author of the original article.

Terms and Conditions for the Destiny money
          1. We will brand every E3 artcle with a special Destiny skin and header image
          2. All E3 header images will have the Destiny marketing on them
          3. One 300×600 banner will be placed in the right side panel
          4. We guarantee a certain number of hits
          5. Destiny background advertising for all artcles for the month of June

Free additions given to the client
          1. Pre and Post roll for videos
          2. E3 2014 Minisite with Destiny branding

To clarify, we were sending two people to E3 already. We approached all companies to see if they wanted to buy nto the E3 marketing package which offers fantastic exposure for their brands for an extremely good price.

Megarom accepted the deal first and we only became aware that they were going to push Destiny a week before the package started.

Any other questions feel free to ask, we are beyond reproach when it comes to editorial independance.

The one downfall of investing so much money into a game is there is always a chance of it failing miserably. Like the Titanic, they thought that their money made something unsinkable and a lot of people got on board, but they went down with it.
I’m seriously hoping that Destiny doesn’t get a big ass Ice Berg in their path, it looks fecking fun.

Pretty sure the Titanic was insured. Bet their premiums went up on the other ships though. Also think the Titanic had two sister ships and the hype around it was actually only company PR that the world grasped onto after the ship sunk, but I may be just talking out of me arse. Also I believe that both the sister ships also sank.

Sorry my point got lost somewhere, doing too much at once.

The fact that people died created the hype not the other way round. The people dying was a great tragedy but they didn’t die because of the hype of the unsinkable ship, those people needed to get to america because of the economic situation in Europe and others were tourists that were going anyway. They were not just going because here was a nice new ship.

The reference to the insurance was just to point out that Activision does not have that luxury and if this fails they could be in the doo – doo. Although I speculate that the investment amount is probably over the life time of the game (10 years) and not all up front.

You realize that the previous comment was just a joke?
However, I do get your point, but I simply used the Titanic as an example of ‘Yes, things look promising and bright and fancy, but there can be numerous amount of things that can still go wrong’.
The way people only looked at the “unsinkable” PR stunt is the same way we handle it when games disappointed us. Like with any COD for example, we get excited and squee about how awesome it looks, but when it’s Release Day then there are so many people that chuck their toys because it’s not what they were promised.
If they fail, and I hope to Cthulu that they don’t, then it’s their ice berg. They might not be able to save themselves from that.

    Hmm, comment didn’t post… Copy-paste initiate!

So we’re clear on this: I do not harbour any sort of grudge against
Destiny, nor Bungie. I would very much like to see it do well. However,
if it fails then it sends a very strong message to the industry that
it’s time to wake up and stop spending all this money. I really, really,
REALLY wanted to spend a few thousand words explaining that in the
original article. I figured it would detract from the point, which is
that the gaming industry is spending too much money too quickly. I
understand fully that Activision would not undertake a venture such as
this without some firm forecasts, but I also understand that throwing
    money at a game is not necessarily going to make it successful;
regardless of how many years that money-throwing is spread across.
Calling for some rational thought is not surely internet trolling, is
    it?

Only one issue here: In 1998 Half-Life was released, to this day I can whip out that same disc, 16 years later and play it. In 1995 Doom for Win95 was released and still works nearly 2 decades later.

10 years from now, can I play Destiny?

We are paying more and more for less and less. :

They should just release it on the PC as well. The new consoles are crap and it being multiplayer on their servers only will stop piracy dead in its tracks anyway.

Hm. I say let Destiny fail because yet again Bungie is ignoring the PC gamers out there that would gobble this genre up like cotton candy all in the interests of making 360 and PS3 versions of the game that’s going to noticeably drag down what aspirations the game reaches for.

If you say, “Making a PC version don’t have nuffin to do wif last gen console ports!” I say to you that on multiple occasions when asked about a PC version, they’ve said, “We’re working on versions for four consoles right now and we’re focused on that” with an implied, “We only have so many resources!” Which is a joke given they had half a billion dollars to work with? And Kotick’s many horrible things, but he’s a portaholic. He loves porting games to every platform he can, including PC. Even when other companies were calling PC a piracy magnet (ie., Ubisoft), Activision could at least be relied upon to make a PC port (even if it sucked).

So if it’s not Activision keeping out the PC port, then who is it? Well, now we have Bungie. Defectors from Mac (and PC) post-Halo, they had Gearbox make Halo for PC way, way delayed and then Microsoft ported Halo 2 for them (poorly) to run on Vista to sell that bloated OS.

At no point since Halo has Bungie ever shown regard for PC gamers. This is not a company that deserves money.

So yeah. Let it tank and serve as a reminder to all developers/publishers that if you skip the PC port, you are doomed to fail. Best to forget or delay them last gen ports than forego the PC port.

    Lest you be… Destiny’ed.

I saw the link to the egmr article on N4G and decided “Fuck em’ that’s clickbait”. I’m excited to get Destiny, I loved the alpha and hopefully I’ll be in the beta as well.

Bungie means that is another Gameplay /Feeling when I reach Stage 20. I’m at Stage 26 now, and it’s still like the Beginning. 🙁 It’s nice, of course..but not a Revolution. I give it 6,5 / 10
