Ladies and Gentlemen, this is not a drill, nor is it an elaborate hoax. The Playstation Phone is really happening.

[Update] Move along folks; nothing to see here.  Sony Europe has confirmed the images as fake.

What you see before you is indeed the Sony Ericsson Playstation Phone, and it’s going to be available in not too long. So what kind of specs and features are we looking at? Well how’s about this:

  • 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655
  • 512MB RAM
  • 1GB ROM
  • Range of 3.7 to 4.1 inch screens
  • Face buttons and Dpad
  • Multi-touch pad
  • Shoulder buttons
  • MicroSD card support
  • Android 3.0 (not confirmed)
  • Sony Marketplace

Now… what interests me the most, is the multitouch trackpad thing in the center of the “controller”.

If I am not wrong, the touch pad could very well be a fantastic solution to one of the PSP’s biggest issues… the lack of two thumbsticks. By putting a multi-touch pad in the center, they manage to keep the controller flat, but should still be able to retain most of the functionality that would be had with analog sticks.

I am not entirely sure on this one yet, but it seems to make a lot of sense to me, so I hope that it’s right. It must also be noted that what you see in the pictures is not a final design of any kind, so expect the real deal to be a heck of a lot prettier.

Here are some more photos of the system, thanks to Engadget, who also broke the story. You can click the images to see them even larger.

Seeing that it’s got a touch screen as well this could well become a strong contender in the phone/gaming market…

I’m guessing it’ll be running gingerbread as well. This is definitely the way to go in terms of handheld gaming. The issue is that some people may not be so keen to get it because they already have a phone?

I’d guess taht Sony might release a ‘phone’, free ipad type device that only uses wifi – to try and cut costs.

Not really, this may be why Apple has decided to make a move and they will just kill this when the takeover happens… that or convert the OS to their system instead.

Specs are superior to the 3DS. Wonder what specs the PSP2 is packing.
