“We’re building a beast,” says Xbox Scorpio developer

Look, I may be downright amazed at bright and shiny on the rare occasions that I’m allowed outside to mingle with the normals, but even I can see that the Xbox Scorpio has a helluva lot of hardware behind it. Too much for me to understand properly, as I’m still convinced that a Teraflop is some sort of Xbox-branded Decepticon that is waiting for a chance to transform and pounce onto my face.

But the numbers don’t lie: This is a serious beast machine that’s made for cranking out the best looking games possible on TVs with the highest of resolutions. And that’s the entire goal behind creating a console with generations. “We’re building a beast,” Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg said during Microsoft’s own E3 2016 coverage via DualShockers.

It’s gonna be the most powerful console ever made, and as a guy who was here when we built the original Xbox, that being such a powerful box, and we pioneered with Xbox Live, and some of those innovative games, it really feels like we’re getting back to our roots.

Look at PC gamers when they get their hands on new hardware. They’re positively over the moon, giddy with excitement and they’re more than ready to run a car guard over so that they can get home and slot that shiny new tech in. New hardware, and possibly that smell you inhale when you open the static-proof plastic, is glorious. And getting to play with new toys for the Xbox Scorpio has the team at Microsoft “fired up”, says Greenberg.

I think the team here, we’re all gamers and we love what we do–and I’ve never seen the morale this high. People are fired up about what we’re delivering this year for our fans, and the vision of what we’re doing with Project Scorpio. It’s a pretty special time.

Six teraflops, 8 cores and 320gb of memory bandwidth. I’ve got the hardware inclination of an Amish farmer and even those specs give me severe technolust. It’s a console that I don’t need at all seeing as how I won’t be watching TV on any display that can deliver more than a 1000 peas to my eyes right now. Sort of the equivalent then of owning a Lamborghini Aventador when you live in a suburb.

It is an xbox one just with better hardware so it will still play all the xbox one games.

Ive seen articles where its mentioned, im just hoping its going to be as straightforward as we think.
If i can buy forza horizon 2 and stick the disk in the scorpio and have it work, success.
if i have to go online to buy it digitally at the same price as the xbone, a little less successfull, but still good.
if its online shopping at a more expensive price… my jimmys will be ruffled.

Yes, its the same console.. It is pretty much a setting between “Medium” graphics and “Ultra High”. It is not an Xbox 2.0, its still Xbox One

Wonder what the price will be on this. From the latest generation of graphics cards, it seems we can take any hardware’s dollar value and multiply it by around 23 to get the local pricing (which is ridiculous, but it is what it is). So a 1070 is $380 (around R8500). They are aiming for 4k at apparently a decent framerate. So aside from the GPU, it needs a proper CPU, RAM, etc. I can’t really see it going for less than $800. So that means R18.5, almost R20k for a console. I can’t see anyone in SA spending that much on just a console. Then you need a 4k TV, and then you need to buy games. Doesn’t seem very viable.

Look at the RX480 card coming out for $200. That would give an indication of what kind of tech would be used then. Don’t forget, things will be cheaper by the time they manufacture the parts. And a bigger discount for buying millions.
Plus you don’t need a 4k tv. If you use a 1080, it’ll probably run smoother with a higher frame rate.
