Alessandro's "not a list" of Top Ten Games

A little while ago there was a short run of articles where every writer here on Lazygamer had the chance to force their top ten games down your throat. You then had the chance to tell them either how incredible or incredibly stupid said list was, and it seems like the consensus was that the intern at the time didn’t really know what he was talking about.

All that Fable. What was the man thinking?

One of the first things I was asked to do when I joined last week was create a list of my own. It apparently puts hairs on your chest, but I think that happened after all of you tuned into my radio show last Friday. Or after Geoff made that beautiful header image to announce my arrival. It’s pretty majestic.

If there’s one thing this list has taught me, it’s that I really like playing games alone. I think only one of them is on there for the sole reason of being extremely fun with friends, but other than that I prefer my forever-alone experiences. With that said, let’s get this list going, in absolutely no particular order.

Portal 2

portal2

I love puzzle games. I love them so much that about 90% of the games I design as part of my university course at Wits consist of puzzles and revolve around them. There’s something unique about that moment where a seemingly impossible task suddenly becomes clear to you. Add to that some singing turrets that look like oversized eggs, and you’ve got an absolute winner in my books. Portal 2 stands as possibly the best sequels ever made. A long, varied puzzle title with an absolutely hilarious narrative and incredible voice acting. The Internet may hope and pray for Half Life 3 every single day, but all I want is to hear GlaDOS one more time.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

batman-arkham-asylum-20090129054204704

In Darryn’s list, he chose Arkham City instead of Asylum saying that many would probably disagree with him. I’m one of those people, because there has yet to be an Arkham game that matches the atmosphere Rocksteady created on their first outing. Arkham Asylum was also the first game in a long, long time that proved comic book adaptations could work as games. The free flow system was also so perfectly executed that numerous titles attempted to make their own, better system. There isn’t one that has nailed that, and there probably never will be.

Journey

journey-3

There probably isn’t another game that has left the same impression on me that Journey did. Thatgamecompany was already renowned for its peaceful, artistic gaming experiences, but Journey took this to whole new level. A simple game that only really had you running and gliding, with a distant mountain serving as your only waypoint. Journey managed to tell a sombre, heart-breaking tale without uttering a single word, and introduced me to a whole other side of gaming. This was the game that convinced me this medium could be considered art, and I have yet to play anything as profound.

Transistor

ss7

I’ll be honest; I had a tough time deciding between this and Bastion. Supergiant Games holds a special place in my heart, and Bastion still sits as one of the best games I’ve ever played. But there was something about Transistor that made it just a touch better. Zoe and I have differing views on the game’s narrative. She found it disjointed and confusing, while I on the other hand was absolutely enthralled with the connection between Red and the Transistor. There’s was a love story told with only one of them really speaking, and the conclusion to their journey is both sad and touching.

And let’s not forget that the game featured some of the best turn-based combat in gaming history. Or that sublime soundtrack. Seriously, play this game.

BioShock

bioshock_xbox360_screenshot_61

I sadly hadn’t played any Irrational Games titles before the first BioShock, which is probably why this is here instead of System Shock 2. BioShock was a complete surprise for me, because before playing it I had literally no idea what it was about. Thankfully it turned out to be one of the best shooters I’ve played yet, with an engrossing narrative that touched on more than a few controversial themes. Never mind having a twist on the same level as the ending of The Sixth Sense. Too bad the sequel and BioShock: Infinite couldn’t really compare.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Star-wars-knight-wallpaper

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II was one of the first RPG titles I really got invested in. I played it on my imported original Xbox, but it was only years later that I played the game that started it all, and it was only then that I realised how much better it was. Knights of the Old republic still stands as the best Star Wars title I’ve ever played, and it’s the reason I can’t wait to see what Star Wars project BioWare is currently working on. Here’s another threequel I’d rather have before Half Life 3. Start sharpening those pitchforks everyone.

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped

crash-bandicoot-3-warped_122400

I never owned a PlayStation, but that didn’t stop me from becoming very well acquainted with the Sony mascot of the time. Crash Bandicoot might not have been the first game I ever played, but I know it was the one that ensured gaming would be a major part of my life. The first and second entries into the series were great, but it was Warped that really kicked things up a notch. Varied gameplay styles, riding dinosaurs and characters that haven’t lost their charm, you’d have to try hard to dislike this game. Even today.

Gears of War (Franchise)

04_gears3showcase_chainsawsavageanya_1280x720

The original Xbox had Halo, but the Xbox 360 was known for Gears of War. This was the franchise that formed the backbone of Microsoft’s console, and still stands as the best reason to get a 360. Gears of War featured a robust third-person cover system that hadn’t really been executed that well until then, coupled with some of the best violence games have ever offered. The Lancer is also one of the most iconic weapons in gaming, and cutting Locust enemies to shreds with it never get old. The only thing better is getting to do it to people online, in what was probably my favourite game to play on Xbox LIVE for a long time. Until that sawn-off shotgun was introduced.

Fallout 3

fallout3rk_lg

I hadn’t played any previous Fallout title before dicing into the Capital Wasteland, and I don’t think I ever will – purely because I don’t want to play a Fallout game that is not Fallout 3. Everyone can carry one about how killing dragons in Skyrim is one of the best open-world experiences in gaming. All I want is a Laser Rifle, some Brotherhood of Steel armour and a massive, post-apocalyptic wasteland to explore for countless hours. This is what Fallout 3 was, and Bethesda really do have a challenge ahead of them in terms of a proper sequel. Let’s just forget New Vegas ever happened.

The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings

pic3l

Keeping Skyrim in mind, I’d have to end this list off with what I consider the best modern RPG series. The Witcher 2 released in the same year as The Elder Scrolls V, and I still can’t understand why it lost out on so many end of the year awards. This is mature, captivating storytelling done almost perfectly, with moral choices that are never clear cut. The choices are also so difficult to make that I often chose the same ones on different playthroughs, even though I knew I wanted to see the other side of the story. The gameplay might have been Dark Souls difficult at the start, but once you got going The Witcher 2 wasn’t a game you wanted to let go. I still haven’t.

And with that comes the end of my list, which would probably change only slightly on a different day. There’s a sore lack or really old gems here, but you must remember I’m still a child in the eyes of the Lazygamer team. Be sure to give me grief for that in the comments below, or maybe show a bit of love for some of the ten awesome games I just reminded you about. That backlog of mine just took a backseat.

Wow, where to begin. Alright, basically you’re a dude who wakes up in a giant testing facility controlled by…something. And in order to escape where you’re kind of trapped, you have to go through and solve a vast series of puzzle challenges that employ the use of the Portal Gun to solve them.

This is a very very basic breakdown, because experiencing the….inhabitants of the facility, is something that should be done blind 🙂 Just remember, the cake is a lie.

The story is about a test subject called Chell. With the promise of birthday cake and without anything better to do you partake in a series of “Test chambers” that range between interesting to diabolical. You get a portal gun which shoots either a blue or an orange portal. You step into one and out the other. Using gravity based physics and your own problem solving skills you try to escape the testing facility and try to find out what happened to the people who used to run it. You are constantly manipulated, insulted, praised and/or derided by GlaDos, the AI who is currently in charge of the facility. The cake may or may not be a lie. There are several references to Half life and Black Mesa.

I still do plan to play them. It’s just that Fallout 3 plays so differently to them. I think I’d struggle to enjoy them as much. But I will play them, and Tactics, soon 🙂

Based on the fact that the combat is turn-based, I dismissed the games for years and also thought I wouldn’t enjoy them. Boy, was I wrong! To this day I can’t understand why that put me off initially, as I’d always been an avid civ player.

Except for the first 30 minutes or so it was just as good as Fallout 3 if not better.
But either way Fallout 3/New Vegas would be on my list too, probably close to the top.
Metro 2033 and Last Light would be on my list too.

Once you get out and exploring the game really shines. The “random” things that happen is so awesome. Random people shooting eachother and then a spider starts joining the fight.

I found the Metro games very immersive. The environment, especially metro stations, had so much detail. Unlike most single player games these days I always had an urgency complete the next level. Reminded me a lot of Half Life 2.

Obsidian have crazy bad luck with publishers. I suspect someone high up in their company is one of those people who just agrees to whatever deadline is passed to them. “Deliver the game 6 months before schedule for Christmas? Sure, I’ll tell the boys”

The stories are very different (not to say they don’t both have merits). K1 was a very classic Star Wars redemption/fall to the dark side. Well written for what it was, but still pretty safe. K2 was more of deconstruction of the idea of binary good and evil in the Star Wars universe. I just find it fundamentally more interesting

“Bioware is pretty shallow in comparison”
      Troll much?

KOTOR 1 and 2 have slightly different approaches IMO. Kotor 1 seemed more focused on developing the characters, whilst Kotor 2 was more focused on how the characters fit into a larger story.

That is the broadest possible discriminator I can find between these two nigh-on perfect games.

I rather screwed up the typical RPG route by playing ME before KOTOR :/

Haha, it wasn’t meant as a troll. Personal opinion, but I’ve always felt like Bioware as a whole isn’t especially subtle with their themes. I’m always pretty sure what’s the ‘good’ and the ‘evil’ choice. They can still be epic, and amazing of course.

That said, I still haven’t forgiven them for what they did to Anders in DA2.

Agreed though, characters in K2 were less people and more… themes, I guess. I think that both are better because the other exists, which is cool

You Sir have a great taste in video games! One difference would be Bioshock Infinite – also, like you, I didn’t play anything else from Irrational before that and I had absolutely NO idea what the game was about. I just got back from varsity and wanted to buy a new shooter game for my new pc with my (what I initially thought) awesome salary. As it turns out, that game was fantastic!

“The Internet may hope and pray for Half Life 3 every single day, but all I want is to hear GlaDOS one more time”

I`m with you on that. I`m a huge Portal fan, Portal is to me what half-life is to others.

I also enjoy my single-player games a lot more than playing with friends. I shrieked when I saw BioShock on the list, the Bioshock series is probably my favourite, of all video games. Though I have to disagree with one thing, I thought BioShock Infinite was on par, if not better than the first BioShock, especially if you include Burial At Sea : Episode 1 & 2, in the equation. The atmosphere was different, but it was still good. Had I not been able to see a living Rapture with better visuals in Infinite`s DLC`s, I might have said that I missed the dystopian setting of the first BioShock, but it seems as if they thought of everything, and I`d say, they did a pretty complete and immaculate job before shutting their doors.

BioShock Infinite is not a terrible game. I really enjoyed it, but it lacked that sense of wonder and uniqueness that the first did. I’ve played the first part of Burial at Sea and I honestly didn’t enjoy it. That explosion of information at the end isn’t my cup of tea 🙁

I see your point. They definitely tried a different formula. The only complaint I have, is the fighting was a bit too much, it got repetitive, but when it came to a close, the game quickly picked up again. What? I loved it hahaha, it was so cool to be in Rapture again, with Infinite`s graphics. I understand the explosion of information isn`t everyone`s cup of tea, but for me, it blew my mind, so hard that I had to sit down for a while and think about everything I just saw, to make sense of it all. As Alien Emperor Trevor said, try episode 2 man, it`s the conclusion of the whole BioShock series, I mean, doesn`t a little part of you want to know how it all ends? 😀
