We’re into another year of reasonably fresh hardware, and we don’t have enough new game franchises right now. Time to change all that then. Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Desilets happens to have a new franchise in the works. And it sounds like a massively episodic title that goes by the name of Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey.
Announced at the Reboot Develop event in Croatia, Desilet’s described the new game as an episodic digital game, with a trailer charting some five million years of human history from the discovery of the Higgs Boson particle to the Crusades and beyond. Here’s the official synopsis from the Panache Digital Games website, with the game’s tagline being “the greatest journey of all, our own”.
Our first game is Ancestors : the Humankind Odyssey. Our game is a third person action-adventure survival episodic game. Through each episodes, we want the player to relive the greatest moments of mankind with a documentary twist. Our civilisation is one idea away from extinction… or evolution. Stay tuned much more to come in 2015!

That’s about all that was revealed so far. Sounds kind of intriguing.

How awesome would it be if you couldn’t save. And every decision just plodded along with you with an autosave feature you couldn’t control. And when you hit the ending (or die) the game gives you an ending cut scene recounting the fate of humanity now that you’re done.

The specialist books (note plural) you’d have to buy, just to cover the good stuff in the last five million years, would set you back a few arms and one leg. Buying a game that deals with all the cool stuff over five million years is really a bargain. Plus all the boring stuff you’d have to read to get to the cool stuff? Not even remotely appealing.

Eskom kill my lights at around 18h00 every other day during load shedding. Reading by candle light isn’t always fun. My PDA wins those fights every day. But besides that, I agree with you. The gaming format just brings a lot of inaccessible history (i.e. specialist papers in journal articles) to the mainstream public. Gotta be down with that.

You’re very much right. We do not evolve *from* Apes (or, as others often say, monkeys). Anyone who ever attended any University and took any Evolution course would tell you as much. But we do share common ancestors with chimps, gorillas, etc. And we’re very much Apes ourselves.
