We have breaking news in, for those who are fighting over the idea of migrating to a South African Xbox Live account.
After some testing in an Xbox Live laboratory (like, seriously) we can confirm that Xbox Live South African accounts do in fact accept UK MS Points vouchers as well as Xbox Live Gold Memberships like the ones found on local sites like EvoPoints.co.za.
Why does this matter? We will tell you, and its pretty significant. Find out after the jump.
Ok first off, price is the major factor. For example, if you buy 2100 MS points through your Xbox 360 account directly, you will be paying R299.00 whereas you can get them on the local online sites for only R215. That’s an R85 difference, which is equal to getting around 600 MS points for free.
Then there is also the case of Xbox Live Gold Memberships, which if you didn’t know, are required to for multiplayer gaming and party chats. Buying a 12 month Gold membership through your Xbox Live account will hit you for R590.00 whereas once again, buying a redeemable code online locally will only set your back only R399.00.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that that means you will be saving R190.00 on your Xbox Live Gold membership. R190.00!
So there you have it. You can migrate over to a South African account in the knowledge that you won’t have to get used to higher prices than you are used to. If you are new to Xbox Live, then here’s a great way to get great discount on your goodies.
Have fun using Xbox Live folks.
[Update] MSpoints.co.za is reporting that the 4200 point card does not work locally… don’t waste your money on that one.Last Updated: November 10, 2010

They work now but what are the odds MS will cut them off in the near future after reading articles like this on SA sites???

Quick then go buy 200 000 points from Evo.. I’m sure he won’t mind 🙂
In reality I doubt it will ever be blocked, It’s not like Microsoft will be upset seeing as they get the money anyway and the more people online the better.

Has anyone tried this with US codes? As they are even cheaper with the weak dollar at the moment.

I doubt the US points will work, I think we are lumped in with the UK.

Folks, remember that you can always go and start a new South African account if you just wanna take a peek at the SA live stuff to see how the Marketplace is doing and so on.

I am speaking with Microsoft now and so far the news is looking better… but I still recommend just holding off until we have concrete details
