That fantastic cinematic trailer for Deep Silver’s zombie action game gained all sorts of attention from gamers, media and the general public. It was, as far as video game trailers go, a masterpiece – a rewinding sequence of struggle that evoked emotion and compassion, hinting at strong narrative and drawing comparisons to Quantic Dreams’ Heavy Rain.
That sort of comparison is apparently the very last thing Deep Silver wanted, because the game’s nothing like the Playstation exclusive thriller.
“That was awful for us,” Dead Island’s Sebastian Reichert told CVG. “I mean, let’s be honest, we will be an action game – you will have a serious approach to the zombie setting but we will be an action game.†“We won’t be a dialogue-based game that revolves around emotion. We will have strong elements from examples like Borderlands that will keep you playing.â€
“So, when we heard the Heavy Rain comparison we were like, ‘Whoa!'” “We’ve had problems declaring Heavy Rain as a ‘game’ – it plays like a movie. I’ve had more complex DVD menus [laughs]. We are more like a core game with a serious approach. Yes, of course we like it that people compare us with such great games like Heavy Rain, but we also have to face the fact that we are not Heavy Rain. That’s just a fact.”
Wait wait..hold up. Comparisons to Borderlands? SOLD!
