Diablo 3 might still be coming to consoles

Nick recently mused on the fact that hugely anticipated clickfest and loot-a-thon Diablo 3 still has no visible release date, something that’s made PC gamers – already the grumpiest of gamers even grumpier.

Bound to make them even more incensed is the very real possibility that it’s being held back so that Blizzard can gauge the suitability for a console release.

Speaking at DICE, Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime said: “I think you could make an argument that a game like Diablo might play very well on a console.”

“It’s something that we’re actually doing an investigation into to see if that could make sense,” he added, while pointing out that Blizzard prefers the PC platform due to its flexibility.” For Blizzard’s games to go back to consoles, they’d need to resolve  a “number of issues,” mostly relating to the delivery of timeous patches and large expansions.

If that’s what they need, might I point them in the direction of Valve, who’re setting up a “Steam lite’ on PS3 for just that reason? Microsoft’s certification process is far too drawn out and proprietary for it to happen on the Xbox 360, unfortunately.

blizzard have previously stated they’re exploring the possibility of a console version of Diablo – and that should it happen it wouldn’t delay the release of the PC version – yet I suspect that may be exactly what’s happening.
