Diablo III: Better on console?

Blizzard’s devilish top-selling clickfest Diablo III is making its way to consoles soon – and by all accounts, it could well be the very best version of the game. Of course, that would come as no surprise to many Diablo III players, who’re convinced the latest game in the series is a dumbed-down game intended for consoles in the first place.

The reasons for the console version of Diablo III’s potential superiority are numerous. The first, and most notable is that the combat has been retooled to be a little more real-time, and not just a tiresome progression of clicks; the left stick controls your character, the right analogue stick is used for evading and dodging while the face and shoulder buttons are assigned for use in attacking and using potions. It makes the combat more fluid, more interactive and well, more entertaining.

The second thing that could make it better on consoles is that it features 4 player couch co-op. Very little needs to be said about this; playing games with people who are in the same room as you is a heck of a lot of fun. the console version also does away with that blasted Real Money Auction House – but still allows you to trade items with other players online; keeping the core trading system, but getting rid of that pay-to-win-ethos.

Lastly, the game allows you to actually play the damned thing offline – so PlayStation gamers will never, ever see the infamous Error 37. Here it is in action. Tell s if you’re keen on a console version of Diablo III.

Ah thanks. My friend also sent me this from /www.webafrica.co.za/status/ which says “current estimated time for Seacom is Friday 5 April”. Ouch….will wait a while before getting Bioshock Infinite….don’t know if there’s big day-1 patches to download. Seacom used to be a cable company….but then they took an arrow in the sea. (I know, I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist).

Yeah, it’s the best. I spent the whole weekend playing Borderlands 2 split screen with the wife, even though I have two copies of the game and two consoles – so we could easily have done it via systemlink. There’s just something extra fun about same-screen though.

    RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!

But seriously Diablo 3 is a good game as it stands. It’s itemisation is still bad which is the games biggest weakness but other than that and mob densities there are no other real major issues anymore. I am actually having fun with it, no game is perfect but the game is at least a good game these days, if they release a quality expansion I think the game will be golden. That said I do think they nerfed inferno too much, but monster power makes up for it.

Don’t forget it has no proper skill customization. At level 60 every character of the same class is exactly the same with the exact same skill set available. No skill specialization allowed at all. The only thing that sets you apart is who has the best items.

They made a huge mistake reducing skill diversity so much.

True but I wouldn’t call it a major issue. I would like more variety but it is not the end of the world. The gameplay is fun with the builds that do work.

I hear what you are saying. But I’d much rather have a much greater build diversity than have “some builds that work” and some fun gameplay. And let’s be honest, even the gameplay is not as fun as we all know it should be.

Depends on class I think, I dislike the witch doctor game play. Demon Hunter gameplay is great. Barb can be a little tedious, wizard is great. I agree more variety would improve the game a lot. However it is just not a big issue for me.

Well to each their own. If you enjoy the game then great. Then the game has achieved what it should have with you 🙂

It just didn’t achieve it with me. I was highly disappointed as I was expecting a ramped up version of Diablo II. Instead I got a completely different game that wasn’t the Diablo franchise. It was simply given a Diablo style skin and flavor.

They could have re-labled it with a completely different name and the game would have been a massive success in everyone’s eyes. Now instead they have just pissed off a lot of people as myself lol

I can understand disapointment in the game, the game is still a disapointment despite being a good game. It is not at blizzards normal quality yet.

Agreed. It’s a good game, but it’s not a great game. Not to Blizzard standards like when expected.

I played the Monk first, as I read the back-story, and really enjoyed that. Monk was fun but more of a close range support class. Wizard was my second, great fun with her spells but inevitably more a ranged support class. Barbarian is the only real close range, getting personal, in your face bad-assery char. Which Doctor I enjoyed too, but building that thing right with certain skills and you demolish an area and every destructible terrain. So much going on, I just click click click and run in circles, with so much effects going on and when the carnage subsides, I just spawn another zombie dog lol. Also mostly support. Get’s boring after a while. Demon Hunter just owns, let’s be honest. Since monster power level came out, I’ve played on MPL7 just to enjoy a challenge, and as I climb game difficulty it might come down with 1, depending. So the game is broken, we all know it. Most hardcore fans would agree that D3 did not turn out like the game we were hoping for, and semi hardcore fans like myself enjoyed it none the less, but inevitably came to grips with the facts that it didn’t achieve that X-factor the first 2 titles had.

        March 26, 2013 at 09:50

Yup. The only thing left for me to enjoy are dungeons, as that’s the only randomized (or more accurately, semi randomized) stuff in the game, apart from the item drops. Oh yeah, and those legendary drops… They really fucked up there. There’s NOTHING legendary about them! IF and WHEN you get one, it’s worse than most blue item drops…

LMAO! The so-called Master Race, or should we say… “The Gullible Gaming Guinea Pigs”. They’re the first ones to have dodgy DRM tested on – and they just suck it up, like the abused housewives that they are.

I’m starting to see why they’re so angry. 7 year old kit is optimised to hell, but make one mistake with a dodgy graphics card, and even that pretty new i7 is slumming it with low-res to medium textures.

Yeah. It’s so sad to know a huge company like Blizzard, the company that brought us Diablo 1 and 2, both awesome games, could bring the third one in with such loving anticipation from loyal fans, only to see how they fucked up. Don’t get me wrong, I loved playing it. I’ve got a Monk and Wizard at lvl 60, and a Witch Doctor nearing 50 and some other class chars in intermediate and low level areas. I played my fair share of the game and couldn’t get over the lag when playing alone due to an Internet connection, the repetitive levels as nothing randomizes (except the dungeons and their locations), and the skill tree that didn’t allow for much build diversity. I mean, you can’t really customize your character’s skills, coz you either choose a skill you like and it’s not that effective, or you choose something that works better, but in the end it all feels the same. This could possibly have been more diverse if we could CHOOSE OUR OWN ATTRIBUTES like in previous Diablo titles!!!

Not so much phased about attribute customization I honestly feel the auto attribute option in games is great. You can’t stuff up your char so badly by a few Attribute choices.

But I definitely feel they should have allowed for SKILL point allocation so that one could put extra points in a skill to make it better and allow specialization

          March 26, 2013 at 11:11

Yes, I agree, but think back, you can stuff up your character by allocating attributes that is not optimal for your character and learn what doesn’t work, BUT in some games you could take them out, and put them in another attribute. Build your character, like you want him to be. Play like you want to play. Not just selecting a set of stuff that’s there, and that’s it. Or the option to reset your attribute points to re-customize… I mean, in D2 you got 5 points to put anywhere you wish when you leveled. So you could decide what to focus on. More mana for skills and abilities that require that, strength for more damage dealing, or mix and match and so on.

In D3, it’s “here you go, you unlocked this” and the only thing that would make that better is defined by the items you wear, and that fluctuates every time you have to replace an item coz it might favor something else more, but then you loose out on what it boosted before. This makes the game an item grind fest, and there’s no real fun in that for me. Grinding is a bitch. I’d like to have fun in a game and keep me busy to find places and chests and treasure… In D3, blues drop like it’s nothing and they’re all equally shit. Yellows later on becomes the same, legendary drops are as scarce as Set items used to be, but they’re attributes are worse than blue items, and Set items… well, in the 100’s of hours I’ve played, I think I might have found 1, and it was monk only, but the attributes was aimed at demon hunter, AND it was low amount of attributes at that, so it pretty much sucked balls. = BROKEN!
