Diablo III: Better on console?

2 min read

Blizzard’s devilish top-selling clickfest Diablo III is making its way to consoles soon – and by all accounts, it could well be the very best version of the game. Of course, that would come as no surprise to many Diablo III players, who’re convinced the latest game in the series is a dumbed-down game intended for consoles in the first place.

The reasons for the console version of Diablo III’s potential superiority are numerous. The first, and most notable is that the combat has been retooled to be a little more real-time, and not just a tiresome progression of clicks; the left stick controls your character, the right analogue stick is used for evading and dodging while the face and shoulder buttons are assigned for use in attacking and using potions. It makes the combat more fluid, more interactive and well, more entertaining.

The second thing that could make it better on consoles is that it features 4 player couch co-op. Very little needs to be said about this; playing games with people who are in the same room as you is a heck of a lot of fun. the console version also does away with that blasted Real Money Auction House – but still allows you to trade items with other players online; keeping the core trading system, but getting rid of that pay-to-win-ethos.

Lastly, the game allows you to actually play the damned thing offline – so PlayStation gamers will never, ever see the infamous Error 37. Here it is in action. Tell s if you’re keen on a console version of Diablo III.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

  • Sir Captain Rincethis

Oh gods, here comes that PC Warrior Platoon!

  • JHN

Is it being released on Xbox as well or only PS3?

    • Omly Ps3 and PS4 announced at the moment, other platforms have not been ruled out. I would dig this on my Vita.

      • Admiral Chief Erwin

The only vita I am interested in is a Provita! Nomnomnom

    • Martin

Sorry for being off topic. But is anyone else still have internet problems in SA? Making online gaming nigh impossible.

      • Almost everyone; both Seacon and EASSAY are down; taking 2/3rds of the major isps with them.

        • Deon Steyn

Good I thought it was my torrents 😛

        • Martin

Ah thanks. My friend also sent me this from /www.webafrica.co.za/status/ which says “current estimated time for Seacom is Friday 5 April”. Ouch….will wait a while before getting Bioshock Infinite….don’t know if there’s big day-1 patches to download. Seacom used to be a cable company….but then they took an arrow in the sea. (I know, I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist).

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

You couldn’t resist could you? PS: I’m taking that joke and re-posting it on twitter

  • kid the billy

darnit. Bliz why you take all my monies?

  • Uberutang

Same screen coop is the WAY to play these games. Glad to see it making a comeback on consoles.

    • Yeah, it’s the best. I spent the whole weekend playing Borderlands 2 split screen with the wife, even though I have two copies of the game and two consoles – so we could easily have done it via systemlink. There’s just something extra fun about same-screen though.

  • GTO

But seriously Diablo 3 is a good game as it stands. It’s itemisation is still bad which is the games biggest weakness but other than that and mob densities there are no other real major issues anymore. I am actually having fun with it, no game is perfect but the game is at least a good game these days, if they release a quality expansion I think the game will be golden. That said I do think they nerfed inferno too much, but monster power makes up for it.

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Don’t forget it has no proper skill customization. At level 60 every character of the same class is exactly the same with the exact same skill set available. No skill specialization allowed at all. The only thing that sets you apart is who has the best items.

They made a huge mistake reducing skill diversity so much.

      • GTO

True but I wouldn’t call it a major issue. I would like more variety but it is not the end of the world. The gameplay is fun with the builds that do work.

        • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

I hear what you are saying. But I’d much rather have a much greater build diversity than have “some builds that work” and some fun gameplay. And let’s be honest, even the gameplay is not as fun as we all know it should be.

          • GTO

Depends on class I think, I dislike the witch doctor game play. Demon Hunter gameplay is great. Barb can be a little tedious, wizard is great. I agree more variety would improve the game a lot. However it is just not a big issue for me.

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Well to each their own. If you enjoy the game then great. Then the game has achieved what it should have with you 🙂

It just didn’t achieve it with me. I was highly disappointed as I was expecting a ramped up version of Diablo II. Instead I got a completely different game that wasn’t the Diablo franchise. It was simply given a Diablo style skin and flavor.

They could have re-labled it with a completely different name and the game would have been a massive success in everyone’s eyes. Now instead they have just pissed off a lot of people as myself lol

          • GTO

I can understand disapointment in the game, the game is still a disapointment despite being a good game. It is not at blizzards normal quality yet.

          • Agreed. It’s a good game, but it’s not a great game. Not to Blizzard standards like when expected.

          • I played the Monk first, as I read the back-story, and really enjoyed that. Monk was fun but more of a close range support class. Wizard was my second, great fun with her spells but inevitably more a ranged support class. Barbarian is the only real close range, getting personal, in your face bad-assery char. Which Doctor I enjoyed too, but building that thing right with certain skills and you demolish an area and every destructible terrain. So much going on, I just click click click and run in circles, with so much effects going on and when the carnage subsides, I just spawn another zombie dog lol. Also mostly support. Get’s boring after a while. Demon Hunter just owns, let’s be honest. Since monster power level came out, I’ve played on MPL7 just to enjoy a challenge, and as I climb game difficulty it might come down with 1, depending. So the game is broken, we all know it. Most hardcore fans would agree that D3 did not turn out like the game we were hoping for, and semi hardcore fans like myself enjoyed it none the less, but inevitably came to grips with the facts that it didn’t achieve that X-factor the first 2 titles had.

          • Seconded.

      • Yup. The only thing left for me to enjoy are dungeons, as that’s the only randomized (or more accurately, semi randomized) stuff in the game, apart from the item drops. Oh yeah, and those legendary drops… They really fucked up there. There’s NOTHING legendary about them! IF and WHEN you get one, it’s worse than most blue item drops…

  • Twakkie

If I bought this game on PC I would be so pissed tight now.

  • Deon Steyn

Couch co-op FTW. This is starting to sound better and better.

    • Deon Steyn

How’s that saying. You gotta break some eggs if you want to make an omelette.

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Well, I surely feel like I was kicked in the nuts. So they absolutely broke enough eggs…

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

LMAO! The so-called Master Race, or should we say… “The Gullible Gaming Guinea Pigs”. They’re the first ones to have dodgy DRM tested on – and they just suck it up, like the abused housewives that they are.

I’m starting to see why they’re so angry. 7 year old kit is optimised to hell, but make one mistake with a dodgy graphics card, and even that pretty new i7 is slumming it with low-res to medium textures.

  • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Oh great. Give console players offline play. Don’t worry about the PC players. Oooooh no. Claim the game NEEDED online to run the drop calculations and stat effects. Claim it would make it better.

Screw you Blizzard! I will NOT support your products ever again!

    • LordCaptainAwesomeness

Well There is still SC2…so far they have not ruined that…..

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

As I said. I won’t support them. In any way or form. I know it doesn’t change anything for them. 1 lost sale is not even a pebble in a pond. It’s nothing to them.

But to me it changes my world. My world becomes better because I don’t have to worry about Blizzard destroying my hobby 🙂

        • Johan du Preez

Couldn’t have said it better myself, have a +1

        • LordCaptainAwesomeness

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Love that guy 🙂 He is the rant king!

      • Brady miaau

um, no. I stopped playing a year ago because I could not play single player against AI without the server letting me. And it would not.

A bug they said. Re-install they said. They lied I said. Next patch solved problem.

    • Draco Lusus

The very reason I have not bought the new SC2…so 2 pebbles in their ocean.

    • Yeah. It’s so sad to know a huge company like Blizzard, the company that brought us Diablo 1 and 2, both awesome games, could bring the third one in with such loving anticipation from loyal fans, only to see how they fucked up. Don’t get me wrong, I loved playing it. I’ve got a Monk and Wizard at lvl 60, and a Witch Doctor nearing 50 and some other class chars in intermediate and low level areas. I played my fair share of the game and couldn’t get over the lag when playing alone due to an Internet connection, the repetitive levels as nothing randomizes (except the dungeons and their locations), and the skill tree that didn’t allow for much build diversity. I mean, you can’t really customize your character’s skills, coz you either choose a skill you like and it’s not that effective, or you choose something that works better, but in the end it all feels the same. This could possibly have been more diverse if we could CHOOSE OUR OWN ATTRIBUTES like in previous Diablo titles!!!

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Not so much phased about attribute customization I honestly feel the auto attribute option in games is great. You can’t stuff up your char so badly by a few Attribute choices.

But I definitely feel they should have allowed for SKILL point allocation so that one could put extra points in a skill to make it better and allow specialization

        • Yes, I agree, but think back, you can stuff up your character by allocating attributes that is not optimal for your character and learn what doesn’t work, BUT in some games you could take them out, and put them in another attribute. Build your character, like you want him to be. Play like you want to play. Not just selecting a set of stuff that’s there, and that’s it. Or the option to reset your attribute points to re-customize… I mean, in D2 you got 5 points to put anywhere you wish when you leveled. So you could decide what to focus on. More mana for skills and abilities that require that, strength for more damage dealing, or mix and match and so on.

In D3, it’s “here you go, you unlocked this” and the only thing that would make that better is defined by the items you wear, and that fluctuates every time you have to replace an item coz it might favor something else more, but then you loose out on what it boosted before. This makes the game an item grind fest, and there’s no real fun in that for me. Grinding is a bitch. I’d like to have fun in a game and keep me busy to find places and chests and treasure… In D3, blues drop like it’s nothing and they’re all equally shit. Yellows later on becomes the same, legendary drops are as scarce as Set items used to be, but they’re attributes are worse than blue items, and Set items… well, in the 100’s of hours I’ve played, I think I might have found 1, and it was monk only, but the attributes was aimed at demon hunter, AND it was low amount of attributes at that, so it pretty much sucked balls. = BROKEN!

    • Yateen Dayaram

im also peeved off about that….why cant they provide pc gamers the offline mode…wtf mafuggas! I also don’t support Blizzard anymore…I spent so much on that collectors edition box..and I stopped playing D3 after a mere month of its release coz it was unbearable…so much regret….

  • OVG

    Better on the shop shelf.

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Better in a dumpster set alight using napalm!

      • Deon Steyn

I will not even buy it for PC at 37% off the full price.

        • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

I have it on PC. Hence why I rage every time a D3 topic is posted

          • Deon Steyn

Blizzard couldn’t even care less. Best is now every one knows it could have been offline from the start.

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

We knew that before they did this. We aren’t stupid.

We knew it was dumbed down for console play. We said it when we realized how minimal the skill customization actually was once we started playing.

Heck we knew before we started playing but because it was Diablo we believed the game would still be amazing and make it work! We thought they knew what they were doing and trusted them.

It was a mistake. We were taken for fools and we all fracking fell for it. This was a cash cow for them. Nothing more.

          • Deon Steyn

I’ll upvote you till my mouse breaks.

          • Sir Captain Rincethis

            Heheheh, let it flow!

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

          • BWAHAHAHA!!! Spot on with that pic! 😀

          • OVG

          • i know, I still cry nightly, just like my uncle made me do *mew*

          • AndriyP

  • Marc

Sucks that the PC version doesn’t get offline support, but meh. If I didn’t own the PC version, I’d have definitely gone for the PS3 one.

  • Deon Steyn

I wonder if SimCity might come to the console…. Offline version of course.

  • Darth_Clericus_The_Ultimate

This hurts me. A PC game that sucked on Pc but will own on console. Ouch.

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Tis what happens when a game is created with the console in mind. One cannot create a game that will function great on a controller and expect it will be the same great experience on a keyboard and mouse. Developers need to learn this and learn it fast

      • Yup, they need to stop letting console artards ruin games.

  • jelly?

  • Looks more like a 3rd person button mashing hack & slash than a RPG title.

  • Johan du Preez

What s slap in the face for PC gamers from Blizzard oh sorry Activision. It wont change anything blizzard is dead to me anyway.

    • Just because you do not understand the ending of ME3 does not mean Bioware is destroyed.

      • Johan du Preez

        I didnt finish ME3 yet ….

  • TumaK

Nothing is better on console. PC rules

  • Sir Captain Rincethis

And not a f**k was given… Hey chaps, would you like a game, where when you hit lv 60, you are ALL THE SAME? Sticking to Borderlands 2, at least the, what feels like 50 cycles since it was released, has led finally to a level cap!

    • OVG

lol at the PS4 launch. AND NEXT UP… WE HAVE DIEABBLO 3 for the PS4… ROFL

If they do that at the 720 launch .MULTI PLAT DIEABBLO 3 XBOX LIVE MONEY AUCTION HOUSE.

Ill piss my pants. The 8th Generation is shaping up to be more comical than Monty Python. Its all run by the West Wing accountants in some underground bunker.

  • ….

  • GooseZA

If it ever comes to Xbox I’d probably pick it up again.

  • Wyzak

So Blizzard gives a big FU to all PC gamers all over the world. Gee thanks Blizz! I’ll remember that 😉

  • Kingkappie

well i will get this for my xbox and play it for ever

  • Skyblue

Cool! Consoles get a shittier looking version of a very average game and they don’t even get to have the error 37 ragefest… seriously though, Diablo III was the most overhyped turd released in years

  • On PC, you use the mouse to point where and which enemy to attack… How do you control that with the console controller?

  • I’ll def give this a go on the PS3!

  • Direct character control…HELL YEAH!

  • HvR

Yep this happens when you get a bunch of cheese eating surrender monkeys controlling the gaming industry.

They bugger up Mechwarrior, then C&C, then they create mush called CoD and brainwash a whole generation of gamers into liking it and now this ….

Be WARNED monkeys we will have our revenge, we will pirate and steal, we hack your Twitter and we will post videos of Guy Fawkes masks. BEWARNED….

But beware my console half-brothers, one of these day the monkeys are going to buy the likes of Sony and MS and make you stuff the controller your arse and make you fart on the Z button because you must pay via micro transaction for X button … I you will be convinced that it is fun.

  • Yateen Dayaram

console players..they can play offline??………forever alone

  • BinaryPixie

  • Now things makes sense.

Now that Diablo 3 is going to console, can we (PC) now get a less dumb downed version of the game?
