Naughty Dog: Sony Manager Explains Recent Departures: “It’s a Daily Occurrence” in the Industry

    by Giuseppe Nelva

    PS4NEWS

Lately a few prominent developers have left Naughty Dog in order to pursue other endeavors, and each of those departures has found prominent purchase in the news. As a matter of fact it seemed that a few very visible media outlets purposely hunted down every single developer that decided to change job for one reason or the other in order to build an overarching (and probably quite profitable) narrative.

Recently Sony Asia Region Marketing Manager Naito Arata commented on Naughty Dog’s departures, explaining that they aren’t as much of a problem as many may think:

“Lately developers leaving Naughty Dog have made the news often. In this the gaming industry and the movie industry in hollywood are the same. People move with every project, and this kind of movement is a daily occurrence.

After shipping a successful project like The Last of Us, developers will be in high demand and will be offered better salary.

I feel that the great thing about Naughty Dog is that they managed to keep their DNA and produce top quality products for 30 years in an industry where the exchange of top talent is this intense. You could say that all the staff shares the same “height of the hurdle”

It’s also because of the organization is structured like a small Japanese factory in the good old days… (or at least I think so, because I never worked in a small Japanese factory in the good old days, lol)”

Arata-san knows Naughty Dog quite well, as he worked for years in the production and localization of Sony’s western games in Japan before becoming Marketing Manager, and that includes the Uncharted series and The Last of Us.

If you love Naughty Dog, you definitely shouldn’t worry too much. The sky isn’t falling.

Majority of (US) Gamers Prefer Discs over Digital

The majority of core gamers in the United States prefer to buy their games on physical discs rather than digitally, according to a new study from research firm the NPD Group. When pricing is the same, 74 percent of respondents said they would opt for a physical disc over a download. Though physical media still reigns king for core gamers, a preference for digital is growing, up 5 percentage points compared to last year, the NPD Group said.

Also in the report, titled Core Gaming 2014, the NPD Group found that there are 34 million core gamers total in the United States. These gamers spend an average of 22 hours per week playing video games, the report found.

The NPD Group defines core gamers are those people who play games for at least five hours per week on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, or Mac. In a statement, NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan said he expects the average time spent playing games will only increase as a result of the launch of the Xbox One and PS4 console generation.

“Core gamers are really the lifeblood of the industry, spending tremendous amounts of time on their hobby of choice,” Callahan said. “With the new console generation off to a great start, we can expect the amount of time spent gaming to increase as more core gamers adopt them.”

Of the 34 million core gamers in the US, around two-thirds (22.6 million), said they also play games for smartphones and other mobile devices. Core gamers are also big fans of multiplayer games, the report found, noting that around 70 percent of core gamers play multiplayer titles regularly or occasionally.

“Core gamers are an important part of the games industry and understanding their behavior is critical to anyone invested in the games space–especially considering the launch of the new consoles and the continued evolution of digital gaming,” Callahan said.

    – Three cheers for Core Gamers!

You read that right, no it’s not April 1st, there is actually free DLC, containing an actual MP map that you can actually download. Craziness, I know. I guess GG hasn’t gotten the memo that it’s illegal for any DLC to ever be free.

Jonathan Blow’s long-awaited follow-up to Braid, The Witness, will run at 1080p with 60 fps on PS4, according to its creator.

“At release on the PS4, we are planning to render at 1080p and 60 frames per second,” Blow stated on the PlayStation Blog. “Right now we meet this target in many areas of the game, but not everywhere. But with more old-fashioned hard work we should be.”

As for when the game’s coming out, Blow remained cagey. “It is still officially ‘when it’s done’, but these days ‘when it’s done’ is getting closer and closer,” he explained. “The Witness is an ambitious game with a lot of things for us to get right, and getting it right takes time; I don’t want to rush the game out at the cost of quality.” Blow noted that he’s been working on The Witness for five years, so there’s no sense in rushing it now.

It’s pretty far along, though. “All the gameplay along the ‘main line’ of the game – the stuff you would expect to do from the beginning to the end of a standard playthrough – is done,” he said. “But, this is a game that has a lot of extra things for players who are really into the game and want more; we are still designing some of those extras.”

For now, enjoy nine new screenshots of Blow’s upcoming enigma.

Watch_Dogs Goes Gold Just Before Launch

    by Megan Smith

    XBOX ONEXBOX 360PS4PS3Wii UPCNEWS

Ubisoft has revealed that their upcoming hacker game, Watch_Dogs, has already gone gold.

Creative Director Jonathan Morin has stated:

“It’s exciting to be gold, but it’ll be more exciting when people are playing. For the fans it means that it’s true. It means there will be no such thing as another delay. But for us, it’s not done until they actually have it in their hands.”

    He also adds:

“I invite players to play it the way they want. To explore the different ways of playing. To not necessarily follow the instincts they know from other games. To find your own fun in it. That’s how Watch Dogs is meant to be played.

The game was first revealed at E3 in 2012 and has been in development for over five years. The worldwide release date is set for May 27th on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and on the Wii U.”
