Earlier this week a MS points code generator appeared online, allowing thieves to create their own redeemable 160 point codes for Microsoft’s digital delivery service. Microsoft shut the site down and plugged up the exploit pretty quickly, but not before the damage was done.
There might be bad news looming for those who took advantage. Microsoft’s not too happy about the loss of potential revenue – and shall mete out due punishment.
Speaking to Gamasutra the company says it’s “taken steps to invalidate the codes obtained illegitimately,” voiding any unused illicitly generated codes – and will be punishing point scammers.
“We take safety and security very seriously and require that Xbox Live members use the service in compliance with applicable laws and specifically prohibit people from engaging in illegal activity as a part of our Terms of Use and Code of Conduct.
“Our Policy and Enforcement team is evaluating whether or not certain individuals have violated the Terms of Use for Xbox Live and will take the appropriate enforcement on an individual basis. Codes obtained legitimately by users will not be impacted.”
The company’s also refuted the $1.2 Million reported loss – saying “We can’t share specific numbers, but the figure is nowhere near the amount that has been reported.”
