Microsoft's next console

Tech.co.uk has been gazing into their local crystal ball and have come up with what they expect the next Xbox which is expected to release in 2011 will be like.

This would be much harder to do for the PlayStation or Nintendo as they don’t follow the standard PC architecture as Microsoft do. Anyway straight to the list…

  • CPU/GPU – Integrated chip with 16 x 5GHz processor cores, 32 x 2GHz graphics cores
  • Memory – 8GB GDDR8
  • Media – Dual-format HD-DVD/Blu-ray drive for backwards compatibility and movies
  • Storage – 4TB hard disk for online game (and movie) delivery
  • Built-in camera – for gesture-based control
  • Built-in microphone – for voice-recognised control
  • The Microphone sounds like a terrible idea, I really am not sure about how much I would like talking to my games, the camera is pretty obvious I think as well.

So what else do you think they are missing? I wouldn’t mind having mini LCD screens on the controller which provided me with extra info on the game as well as a place to read my ingame messages.

I wonder if it will also come with 5 x as many lights so that the next gen RROD can glow extra bright too 😉

Maybe the PS4 will be able to sell as a microwave just in case people dont buy it? 😉

16 X 5Ghz cores, damn! Look how the technology of games progressed in the past 5 years, imagine how it will be in the next 5 years.

NO @#!$%^& WAYS. We just got quad cores out, now they wanna go to 16 cores, please. Impossible.

      More realistic specs would be:

      CPU – 8 x 3.2 GHz
      GPU – 8 x 2 GHz
      RAM/Memory – 2GB GDDR4
      Storage – 250 GB
Media – HD-DVD/Blu-ray Player. No ways in hell dual-format.

We only got Quad cores now, but 2 years ago we didn’t even have real Dual Cores. So I think that following that trend 16 cores are quite possible in 5 years time

Actually we did, AMD had produced the X2 line way back in 2004 already.

um it is only happening in 2011…

in anycase I don’t think the Console will come built-in with a camera or mic.

I mean how else do you think M$ make their moola?

all fantasy I tell you. the next console won’t be at all. It’ll be a “Google-box” running off a mainframe compute cluster, you won’t buy it, all you’ll pay is your Live Gold Subs.

You won’t have a “console” but your controller will connect wirelessly to the internet and interact directly with the server and what you see on the screen will basically be a streamed photorealistic TV signal of what you’re doing from the server.

      😉

We had dual processors long time ago (even 16 way boxes) they just recently integrated them into one piece of silicon and made them cheap enough for the average consumer to buy. Its not hard to imagine 16 cores, but if programmers can’t even get to grips with the Cell it doesn’t bode well for a 16 core monster.

However, even though PCs accelerate at a phenomenal rate I don’t think the same will hold true for consoles as there is still one limiting factor. The TV. I don’t foresee that by 2011 that another format would supersede the 1920 x 1080 HDTV format and be ubiquitous by then.

I doubt that the next gen of consoles will force display upgrades. So actual 1080p will be the order of the day.

Agree with the super large HD (close to 1TB… 750GB somewhere there) because digital content will become more mainstream. Not sure if the world will be ready for complete digital content in 2011, but it’ll play a major factor.

Dual format drives… very likely. MS is punting the 360 as a media centre, so the ability to play both formats will be a requirement.

I doubt there will be a next “next-gen” console for Sony as they have refocused their efforts back on Visual & Audio equipment bar the Playstation.
