Nintendo may introduce Blu-ray enabled Wii

56 second read

Now that is a headline I never expected to see. But could it be true.

People have been expecting some sort of movie playback ability to be added to the Wii but absolutely no one would have guessed that instead of having a DVD playback facility it would be Blu-Ray.

The rumour is that an unnamed source got lost in the Nintendo building and accidently walked in on some Nintendo engineers watching a Blu-Ray movie on a modified Wii.

While this would undeniably be a huge coup for the Blu-Ray camp I just can’t see Nintendo pushing up the price of the Wii and there is no way they can stick a Blu-Ray player into the Wii and keep it’s current price.

It could also really hurt the sales of the PS3 if it was no longer the only console to play Blu-Ray movies….

It would be an odd move from Sony especially, as you say, it would hurt their ps3 sales. Surely they wouldn’t allow it? They still fully own blu ray right? It would be nice though.

I think its a false rumour as Sony would certainly shoot themselves in the foot by allowing their biggest rival to integrate a BR drive in their 5:1 selling console. Vaporware anyone?

with blue ray becoming the HD market leader, that may be a smart move for Nintendo.
