No Man’s Sky Beyond will be three major updates rolled into one

If ever there was a case of a video game redeeming itself, No Man’s Sky would be at the top of that list. While the original game may not have lived up to the hype, a few years back in the oven saw No Man’s Sky hit back with a vengeance thanks to the NEXT update. Not entirely perfect, NEXT doubled down on what made No Man’s Sky great and managed to clean up several other niggling issues within the game at the same time.

So what’s next for Nomanskies (THANKS THAT’S STUCK IN MY HEAD NOW AL AND MATTY)? With the NEXT era over, it’s time to go…Beyond:

Each chapter for No Man’s Sky has been more successful than the last. Thanks to our community, NEXT – our large release last year – was especially so. It went on to bring enjoyment to millions of new players, and it helped to change the legacy of this game we care so much about,” Hello Games founder Sean Murray wrote on the PS Blog.

Earlier this year, whilst working on our roadmap of three future updates, we decided we wanted to interweave their features, and had a vision for something much more impactful. We are excited to announce that Beyond will contain those three major updates rolled into one larger free release. The first component of Beyond we are announcing today is No Man’s Sky Online.

No Man’s Sky Online includes a radical new social and multiplayer experience which empowers players everywhere in the universe to meet and play together. Whilst this brings people together like never before, and has many recognisable online elements, we don’t consider No Man’s Sky to be an MMO – it won’t require a subscription, won’t contain microtransactions, and will be free for all existing players.

These changes are an answer to how we have seen people playing since the release of NEXT, and is something we’ve dreamed of for a long time. We will talk more about each component when we know we can be precise, and look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks. Beyond will be our most ambitious chapter so far, and something we’ve been working ridiculously hard on. We’ll continue to support No Man’s Sky in this way for the foreseeable future.

It’s unexpected but so rewarding to see so many accolades and nominations for No Man’s Sky as Best On-going or Most Evolved this year. To some NEXT may have felt like a natural end-point for our journey, but for us it was another step on a longer voyage.

If Beyond can do for No Man’s Sky what NEXT did, then this charming space adventure might just be a genre-defining space sandbox of exploration and creation. Hopefully these upcoming changes, will also include a redesigned user interface because the current setup definitely isn’t doing Nomanskies any favours.

I’ve been meaning to go back since they added the whole underwater thing. Guess I’ll wait on this. 😀

A lot has changed but it still feels like the core of the game is a bit lame. After you’ve learned the new resource system and everything its still the same old grind with lots of RNG when it comes to equipment and ships.

Not like that grind is anything new, but maybe it’s just because I got burned out/bored with the
previous versions of the game that the NEXT update also got boring after a while

I played before the NEXT update, and then again afterwards. The grind is considerably less after. I just haven’t played since Abyss released, so I’m not much behind.

I also played on release but that was more a proof of concept, pre-alpha version than an actual game.

Wait there was a release after Next? Wasn’t the underwater stuff part of that?

Yes the grind is less, but there’s still not enough to keep me interested for long. It all just feels the same, and in this case there’s not enough for me to offset that.

There’ve been 2 named releases since Next. Abyss and Visions. Abyss added the underwater stuff, Visions added stuff for the explorers among us.

Come on. It’s too late on a Friday for that kind of facepalm. I’ve done enough of that during the week due to the regular work suspects.

            XD

I think Friday afternoons are the perfect time for these kind of things.
Also my brain has already partly shutdown cause I’m waiting for the electricity to go off at 4PM

The core is still fly around and hope you find the resource/item/ship you are looking for. They’ve definitely improved the resource and crafting system, but you’re still going to spending hours collecting the required minerals to craft stuff. And the start collecting stuff all over again.

That’s why I find it boring. There isn’t any progression with resource collection and crafting. You mine trees right at the start of the game, 100 hours in you’re still going to be mining trees for carbon.

EDIT: Have to add I missed a whole update to the game I’ve not played so there might be stuff that makes this a bit more interesting

I got this after the Next update. Still felt a bit lacking. One day, when I have more time, I’ll dedicate time to this one.
