Not even 1% left, as Crysis 3 maxes out consoles

Smithers, I'm feeling charitable this morning. Give the boy scouts a ten second head start before you release the hounds...

Think back to 2011, and if you had to name a contender for best visuals, you’d be hard pressed to find a game that looked better than Crysis 2. While new mods and extra hardware made the Independence Day simulator look unreal on PC, the game still looked real good on console. And for the next entry in that franchise, developer Crytek is promising a next-gen game on current-gen hardware.

Speaking to Videogamer, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said that Crysis 3 used so much power on the gaming platforms available, that not even “1%” was left out of the equation.

Crysis 3 is absolutely maxing out the consoles. There is absolutely not even 1 percent left. No game will ever look technically better than Crysis 3 on these consoles, flat out. Most games are not even anywhere near Crysis 2 technically.

I’m not talking about art style–art is subjective–but the pure fact of what we have been cramming in with Crysis 2 on Xbox [360] and PlayStation [3], I’ve yet to see a game do that still today.

That’s why we said [two years ago] that Crysis 3 is next-gen ready already. We did that without knowing the specs but it’s not going to be much more than what we have done so far. And it turns out we were pretty much right.

Any day I will take a battle against Gears and Halo, whatever, the amount of data we put in and the detail level is far superior. With Crysis 3, we’re pushing that to another level, but the PC is just two levels beyond.

Sounds like a challenge has been laid down. 2012 has seen no shortage of games that really tapped into console hardware this year, from Halo 4 to Far Cry 3 on PC, but it’s going to have some serious competition as well. Just take a look at titles such as The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls and Power Rangers Super Samurai Kinect! There’s going to be a big battle next year as the current-gen console titles pull out their big guns before the future arrives.

And it’s going to look gorgeous.
