For a game like Overwatch, balance is everything. Every minute facet of Blizzard’s new IP needs to be checked and triple-checked, from the speed that certain characters travel at all the way through to just how much of Roadhog’s disgusting outie belly button protrudes because everything matters. And that’s a design ethic that has seen Overwatch rebalance and tweak numerous characters since it went through its beta phases and ended up in retail.
Torbjórn was the target of much grief, resulting that deadly master of turrets being hit with a severe nerfing on console. Widowmaker and McCree also got told to check themselves before they wrecked themselves, and now another character is on the chopping block for being a tad bit over-powered dawg. Because apparently Zenyatta the Omnic monk is being carefully examined by Blizzard for a potential tweaking.
“We’ve been talking about him,” Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan said on the Battle.net forums.
We wanted to see how the Widowmaker and McCree balance changes played out before making any changes. We’re exploring some options right now. Nothing more to report at this time.
Personally, I’d like to see Zenyatta buffed instead of debuffed. I think he’s a fab support character, and a balanced one at that who lacks some punch to go with his zen-balls of doom. And that shows in the Overwatch stats, as Zenyatta is the second-least played character around, with the vastly underrated Symmetra claiming that bottom honour. Peace and love can only go so far in competitive Overwatch I suppose.
If Blizzard can do something with his orbs however, he might climb the ranks quite quickly now that a few certain favourites have been tweaked for the good of the many. He’s kind of like a Buddhist terminator who attacks with unstoppable cricket balls and dammit why isnlt that more appealing already.
