The Halo patch hasn’t fixed matchmaking

There’s a great big patch for Halo: the master chief collection that was supposed to fix everything – especially the game’s rather broken matchmaking system. Since release, players have struggled to get in to matches in the game’s expansive multiplayer mode. That patch is out, weighs in at 1.6GB…and still doesn’t let players play the online multiplayer shooter against other people.

The patch does help smooth out the game’s otherwise laggy user interface, but the biggest, most important part and most anticipated bit of the patch does not a damned thing. The game’s official forums and the Reddit thread are awash with people complaining that they’re still unable to get in to games. When people do get in to games, many report that they’re still faced with uneven teams.

Here are the changes that were meant to be made to matchmaking:

Matchmaking

  • Addressed a number of issues that resulted in extended matchmaking times and low matchmaking success rates.
  • Made a number of updates to how matchmaking progress is communicated to the player. With this update, you’ll see better, more frequent and more informative status updates throughout the matchmaking flow – so “Players Found” for example, will be displayed to let players know where they are in the matchmaking process instead of simply wondering if it’s going to connect.
  • The improved matchmaking flow is as follows: * Searching * Searching for more players * Players found * Finalizing matchmaking process * Connecting session
  • Made an update to ensure that parties stick together when returning from the post-game carnage report
  • Prevented the ability for players “kick” other players from matchmaking games
  • Made an update to ensure that the Roster correctly displays the “searching” UI rather than “My Game Session” while searching for players
  • Removed the possibility to boost ranking through a custom games exploit
  • Made an update to ensure that players cannot get stuck in the matchmaking screen during map voting
  • Made an update to ensure that the “Connecting to your game” message no longer incorrectly displays in the lower right of the screen during gameplay
  • Made an update to the “team creation” phase that allows players to be grouped by team
  • Made an update to prevent players from seeing the “connection failed” dialogue if disconnected during the map voting screen
  • Improved roster / matchmaking lobby stability
  • Made improvements to the accuracy and stability of the “Game Session Details” UI
  • Improved version compatibility

Like Advanced Warfare, this is another mostly online multiplayer shooter that’s been left with its biggest feature broken.  Have you been having issues with Halo’s Master Chief Collection?

Wow another failure on the new generation. Another reason not to upgrade to the new systems. How did this get such a good score when the multiplayer is broken? I am truly disgusted at what the games market has become. Who do we blame in this situation? Is it Microsoft’s fault because the game is broken on their console? Is it the developer’s fault for releasing a broken game?

I felt the game never scored high enough tbh. As a value proposition it is awesome with 4 SP games that work just fine and have been remastered for 1080p play. The multiplayer is problematic but not broken. In an era when a title like COD gets released with 4hr SP and completely broken multiplayer and scores over 80% you have to wonder what the fuck dev’s are doing.

Its difficult. I saw on Forbes that they are calling halo remastered one of the biggest PR failures of the year because of the MP not working. The problem like Fruitfly highlighted that its okay to ship games that are broken. The fact that the day one update was 15 Gig was outrages. Even in first world countries because the XBox only has 500gb space. Now I guess the game has to be installed on you console before you can play it. Also I see alot of value on the SP campaign but Halo made its name because of the awesome MP. Now that is not working and people are pissed. People are getting tired of this shit and will start buying less and less until they sort this out. This is a major problem on both consoles. The only console at this stage that has any appeal to me is the Wii U and its just because it has the least amount of problems.

Wii U also has the least amount of games ;-p I do agree with you though, Nintendo seem to be the only company actually doing QA on their product.
I have also found various little glitches, weird texture pop-in and in several AAA titles I have played on the new consoles thus far. They remind me of PC titles from the 90’s when you had to buy a new video card every year and driver updates were few and far between.

For me it is the developer. Not so many years ago if a game was broken out the box it was a big deal.
These days it is way to easy for a developer to release a flawed game and then just patch it. It is not such a big issue in 1st world countries where bandwidth is available and data costs next to nothing. In 3rd world countries, like SA, where bandwidth and data is at a premium it makes life a bit more difficult.

Surely these issues should have been highlighted during alpha and/or beta testing. Makes me wonder if they know about the problems but ship the game anyway because of deadlines, investors, release dates etc. and just bargain on the day 1 patch to fix everything.

That’s why these days I prefer to wait a couple of weeks for all the bugs to be sorted before investing my hard earned cash.

LOL shame buddy, FC4 was broken as well but they fixed it. Priority is as follows. Get game out the door broken or not. If broken fix with day one patch, if still broken use Twitter to apologize and patch it again. That’s why most get it wrong 🙂
