The Old Republic still a while away – Mr. Kotick not scared

Bioware’s MMORPG set in the Star Wars galaxy, The Old Republic, has been given a release window. This is the first official guesstimate from Electronic Arts, who has taken over as the publisher alongside Lucasarts. According to them, we can expect to Force choke people across the galaxy in EA’s  financial year 2012.

Don’t panic; that isn’t as far off as it sounds. EA’s fiscal year for 2012 actually start in April 2011, which is less than four months away. That being said, a release window of “financial year 2012” is a wide open one. That means, in the worst case scenario, the game could be sixteen months away. Still, it could be as little as four months away but I highly doubt that.

The Old Republic is being labeled as the next big MMORPG (how many times have we heard that though?) so what does the head of Activision think of the whole thing?

Bobby Kotick is, typically, completely unfazed by Lucasarts’s attempt to wrestle the MMORPG crown from Activision Blizzard. He told Reuters: “I can’t say that we’re hugely concerned about that… the audience for World of Warcraft is a pretty committed group of players”. Yeah, I’m sure he has very little to worry about actually. Especially when you consider that Cataclysm lands next week.

I can;t say I care AT ALL for ToR. I’d rather have a proper Knights of the Old Republic sequel running on the Mass Effect 2 engine.

Same here, I’d rather play KOTR 3 than another MMO. I’m sure TOR will do it’s source material justice, but it’s not really lighting a fire under my ass.
