THQ : UFC 2010 Sales Slow Because of Red Dead Redemption

Ahh, it’s always easier to point the bony finger of blame on someone else, than to take responsibility. See, Last year’s UFC Undisputed – THQ’s licenced mixed martial arts brawler – sold like proverbial hot cakes. Sweaty, almost naked man hotcakes. This year’s iteration didn’t fare nearly was well, selling fewer copies than expected.

Why? Everybody and his grandmother bought Red Dead Redemption, apparently – meaning cash-strapped gamers couldn’t shell out for their game – the same excuse Remedy used to explain poor sales of Alan Wake.

“Our sales were softer than where we would have liked them to be,” THQ’s John Rooke told MCV. “We know our UFC and MMA fans have bought it, but we haven’t delivered the broader sales yet. “That’s largely down to Red Dead Redmeption. Rockstar have probably taken a fair amount of our market share. They shipped 5m units, taking a lot of consumer dollars.”

“Last year, we had the perfect storm,” he said. “This year Rockstar did. That’s not to say our sales were in any way disappointing. We still managed to ship 2.6m units, which is a fantastic achievement, and that figure is still growing. And we’ve got a long tail with that product,” he said. “We absolutely believe we will deliver our initial sales expectations for UFC and the 2010 edition has been a phenomenal success.”

I don’t know really. sure, Read dead Redemption has sold a frankly ridiculous amount of copies, but I’d like to believe that it’s because it was something new, fresh and original – and not simply an updated rehash of last year’s game.
