Advanced Warfare’s 1080p on PS4 comes at a price

Price

That ugly beast, resolutiongate, rears its head once again. As you may probably know, the PlayStation 4 version of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare runs at a full 1920x1080p, while the Xbox One’s running the game at a dynamic resolution, that starts at 1360x1080p. The increased resolution in the PlayStation 4 version, however, comes at a price.

While in stills, the PlayStation 4 version tends to look better, according to Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry, it’s the Xbox One that delivers a more consistent, smoother experience. That’s because that dynamic resolution on the Xbox One keeps the game running at a smooth 60fps throughout, while the more rigid PlayStation version sticks at 1080p, sacrificing frame-rate for resolution. Here’s what they had to say:

The resolution issue is an interesting discussion point. For the most part, it works as you’d expect. According to our measurements, the bigger battles in Advanced Warfare’s opening stage do indeed operate with a cut 1360×1080 resolution on Xbox One. Clarity on geometric edges is affected – producing blurrier outlines in our matched shots below – as well as creating a muddier appearance to sub-pixel sampling across trees and grass. The opening shot of Seoul’s skyscrapers is a good example of this, where window details on each building appear cleaner on PlayStation 4.

But while this is telling in static shots, the difference is harder to tally up in action. Sledgehammer’s ground-up rebuild of the Call of Duty engine pushes heavily on post-process effects, such as full-screen (and per-object) motion blur, a depth of field filter and a sparing use of chromatic aberration during play. As a result, the stand-off between the Xbox One’s minimum 1360×1080 and PS4’s full 1920×1080 is less perceptible during hectic firefights, with fast camera sweeps often blurring these high contrast edges.

The Xbox One produces a native 1920×1080 resolution too, but only in subdued moments. Clinical interior areas, such as Atlas’ labs, tend not to strain the hardware enough to enforce a downsized framebuffer. Areas with few NPCs also opens the doors to the full HD resolution, where every on-screen element is perfectly matched down to the last pixel. These moments tend to be uncommon, however, especially given the frenetic, action-focused direction of each mission.

It seems that both versions tend to look the much the same – with the notable difference coming from performance:

In the main, asset quality is identical between the two platforms. From the handling of shadow rendering to texture detail, there’s little to distinguish the Xbox One release from the PS4. But based on the first three campaign levels we’ve analysed in-depth, the larger disparity is in performance rather than in-game visuals.

With patch version 1.04 installed, the PS4 version’s constant 1080p output comes at a price. We catch dips between the 50-60fps lines during battles through Seoul’s streets – with drops to the high 40s caught when throwing the ‘threat’ grenades to scan the area for enemies. Even in perfectly matched scenes, the Xbox One’s performance tends to hold at a perfect 60fps by comparison.

I’m not sure resolution over frame rate was the right choice here, especially for a game like Call of Duty where that buttery smooth 60fps being key. I think it’s silly that Sledgehammer didn’t implement the same dynamic resolution wizardry to keep the PlayStation 4 running smoothly, though that itself may have raised the ire of those who demand PS4 games run at 1080p and nothing below.

What do you think? Did Sledgehammer make the right choice in sticking to 1080p on PS4, or is sacrificing fps for p’s a little silly? Of course, there are those tinfoil hats who’ll affirm that the lesser PS4 version is because of some cash-exchanging deal between Microsoft and Activision to gimp the Sony product – which is, I suppose possible, but unlikely; it would come at the detriment to Activision and Sledgehammer’s brand, and that’s not worth the cash injection. Instead, deals that ensure DLC hits one platform first – like the one already in place – would be preferable.  Come to think of it though, review copies of the PS4 version are quite scarce…

The game is out for most today, and for those who’re packing both new consoles, the Xbox One version is likely the clear winner.

Question is, is it really even possible to notice a dip from 60 to 50fps.. I know I can’t, and obviously the devs think so too. I’d rather have a resolution that matches my screen’s native output.. better overall effect.

Yes I know the difference between 30 and 60fps.. it is a big difference. I’m talking about 60fps dipping by a few frames. I don’t notice that when I’m gaming.. it is too minor.

High 40fps actually… So lets just say it drops max 12fps, is that really visible to the naked eye?

Yes, because the drop will be sudden as particles start flying and bodies start dismembering. It won’t be a gradual ease into the change, that’s just the nature of the game in question.

You are 100% correct you will feel the dips into the high 40’s. Its just amazing how the “next gen” consoles cant even do 1080p. In a year or 2 we they will release 720p games at 30fps as the hardware is already outdated and the gamers expect better visuals.

Who cares what you claim to notice? A normal human being can very easily detect a drop from a smooth, synched frame rate like 60, to a torn 57 fps series of images. There’s something wrong with you, or you’re lying. There’s nothing else.

different people have different perspection, it all depends on your brain. If your brain is superior and highly sensitive it can easily notice difference between 30 fps and 60fps or 50 fps and 60fps. Even on higher frame rates like 60 fps vs 90fps

It seems your brain is wired in a way that its inferior that it can’t notice the difference between 30fps and 60fps or for you its just a “minor” difference. This happens usually to poor genetics that you inherited.

For some people though 30fps vs 60fps is a big deal, or even 40fps vs 60fps is a big deal

Drops to 40 are certainly noticeable – plus the image your console outputs either way is 1080p, so the TV never has to do the scaling.

Fair enough, but if it only drops to 40 once in a blue moon then that’s a trade off I’m happy to make. I sit fairly close to a 46″ TV when I’m gaming, so anything sub 1080p is jarring for me.

Up scaled to 1080p makes a huge difference in quality and images being blurred. It might up scale output to 1080p but it hardly looks like 1080p.

Yup that we all can agree on any dips below 60fps is noticeable thats why its such a huge deal. To think console gamers are happy with 30fps because the majority just dont know the difference. They will feel a game running better at 60fps but they will have no clue why it feels faster.

And then you have the fanboys and Ubisoft that argues that 30fps is better. Its not a discussion or argument its scientifically proven that 60fps is faster better and smoother than 30fps. Not even going to go into input latency issues either cause that goes over most console gamers heads.

So its nice that everyone discusses it but its not open for debate its been proven without a doubt that 60fps is bare minimum for 3d gaming. This was a fact in 1996 when the first 3d accelerated games came out and still a fact to this day.

Its only going to get worse and thats why you see developers gimping PC games to look the same as console so that they can keep the console guys fooled.

101 reasons why I pirate console ports and only buy games made for pc these days. Funny thing when I pirate the game it interests me for about 20 minutes then I remove it cause there is no innovation in console games/ports. It the same shit with different skins and environments.

Now Wasteland, Divine Divinity, The Witcher 3, Star Citizen, Elite Dangerous. Shroud of the Avatar, New Homeworld Game oozes innovation and the passion and you can pick it up instantly when you play some of the already released titles.. Keep crappy AAA console ports dont even bother porting to pc.

I’ve had more fun with less, I don’t see why I need to be so self entitled and spoiled that I can’t happily play games below 1080p or at 30fps. I want to discount most of what you said simply because of how arrogant and egotistical and spoiled you sound. Typical PC master race attitude that gives you all a bad image. Honestly, I know 1080 is better, I know 60fps is better. Do I care? Fuck no. I want to have fun and I can regardless of specs. So long as the game can manage without breaking who am I to complain and ask for more? I’m not working on it, and I’m paying the same price we always have for games with higher production values, I really have no right to fuss and whine about this shit and neither does anybody else. Unless your playing games in tournaments like smash bro’s than 60fps is hardly a necessity and there, that’s only the case due to minimizing input latency (No that isn’t something that goes over most console gamers heads you arrogant shit)

In closing, just play the fucking games you enjoy and shut the fuck up about what you think your entitled to. If this COD doesn’t cut it for you just wait 9 months and pick up the next one. The series is the shit stain on the underpants of video game history anyway. The only good part about it is kevin spacey and that’s just because that man is golden.

Because its instantly noticeable. Drop from 60 = more stuttering, increase in input latency. So not only does it look totally different, more importantly it plays differently too.

I’m sorry I just don’t see it that way.. if a game is running 60fps and dips by like 5-10 frames it’s just too minor.. I’m not OCD enough to care or notice. I get it, it’s a big deal for you, but I just don’t see it.

Don’t care how you see it, its facts. If you go around a corner in a racing game and the frames drop due to the scene taking too long to render, your controls are going to feel a lot less responsive because of the input lag its not going to feel great or not make a difference. It already made the difference, your personal feelings on the matter is irrelevant.

Does a drop from 60 to 50 fps create stuttering? Yes.
Does a drop from 60 to 50 fps increase input lag? Yes.

            November 4, 2014 at 09:43

Yes my whole point really is just that I’ve played plenty of games where the frames dip from 60fps and I’d rather live with those dips which I barely notice and have 1080p which is a much more tangible benefit which pays off constantly. That’s my preference.

          • Rags

            November 4, 2014 at 09:49

Then why ask “Question is, is it really even possible to notice a dip from 60 to 50fps” if you knew the answer? Why not simply declare you prefer higher resolution over the input lag and stuttering tradeoffs? *rolls eyes* 😛

          • L337J1MB0B

            November 4, 2014 at 09:53

Look I get that there are people who notice and care deeply about that, which is fine and more power to them. I was just asking/suggesting that your average console gamer out there, like me, do they really notice those dips and would they not agree with me that a higher res is a more meaningful way of improving the game. Obviously I don’t know the answer to that cause I don’t know what other people think.

          • RustedFaith

            November 4, 2014 at 12:21

What developers say means nothing its scientifically proven and untill you can prove its not so its not up for discussion. Its a fact if you feel it or not are irrelevant this has been a fact since 3d gaming started in the 90’s.

Whatever excuses you and “developers” give cant be more wrong. Like I said its scientifically proven its not a debate.

Well you seem to be viewing frame rate dips in the same complacent manner that others view lower resolutions. This goes back to the eternal debate of whether resolution is as important as fps. PS4 owners have convinced themselves that it’s 1080p or bust and any less is a MS payoff and Xbox one owners have accepted sub 1080p as long as the gameplay is solid which is heavily dependent on a stable frame rate though some say a lower resolution affects distant object sight. Personally I like avoiding frame dips as it does affect my controls and visually it’s distracting. To each their own, but due to this, IMO, artificially created obsession with 1080p thanks to Sony, these frame rate dips will be common place while the Xbox one will be less susceptible due to it’s early acceptance of sub 1080p.

To a layman no, however keep track of frame rates long enough on your PC with programs like Fraps and eventually you become more sensitive to the smaller dips. Dips to something ridicuously small like 58 or 59 (I use Adaptive VSync so I’m never above 60) for a split second I don’t notice unless I have the rate showing, however if it dips to the low 50’s I can usually tell. Mostly its just getting a feel for when things seem inconsistent.

Digital Foundry consistently proves PS4 versions of multiplatform games run at higher resolutions, framerates, and better visual effects than Xbox.

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare SP Campaign

XB1: 1360 x 1080 when any action is going on, which is most of the time. 60fps most of the time, some very brief drops to 40s or low 50s. Adaptive V-Sync (screen tearing). Crushed blacks that can’t be disabled.

PS4: 1080p native, 58-60fps most of the time, some very brief drops to 40s or low 50s. Fully V-Synced (no screen tearing)

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Multiplayer

XB1: 1360 x 1080 100% of the time, res scaling disabled, 60 FPS locked. Crushed blacks that can’t be disabled.

      PS4: 1080p native, 60 FPS locked.

You pick it up easily in frantic FPS games at 1080p. At 720p or less it’s not much of an issue.

I have to say, resolution can suck a duck. Frame rate really is key in FPS games, and in all honesty, in any game. As per the article, visually, while playing, you’ll be hard pressed to find the difference in resolution, but frame rate is easily spotted.

Stop with the resolution debate people, start with the frame rate.

On larger screens the difference in resolution will become more apparent (i.e projectors). I just like a consistent frame rate for FPS games even if it has to be 30fps. It’s the jumps that annoy me the most.

I thought the headline was referring to the gulf between the Season Pass DLC on either console which FYI is currently sitting at R200 cheaper on Xbox One.

I’ve watched all of the videos on the link ToshZA provided (http://30vs60.com/) and while I can see a difference, it is so little that I literally have to sit and watch the videos 10 times for me to really see it. I just cant see what difference it will make to game play. Personally I think most people are always just looking for something new to moan about. Same with the resolution. That is why the Exclusive first party line up is more important now than ever.

We all expected the 8th gen to have a very slow start after the HARD TIMES that the end of the 7th proved to all those closed studios.

I’ve played about 5 or 6 of the campaign missions and frankly I did not notice any dip in FPS at all.

Dipping to high 40s FPS is not noticible (Remember, TV runs at 24 – 29 FPS), so that’s really just drama for jurnalists to froth over. Your average gamer without a Frame Rate monitor will not notice anything except friikken awesomeness in the campaign missions. Even when there is a drone swarm attack, which I would imagine to be very graphically taxing, the game just runs well.

It’s really fast paced and I’m very impressed with what I’ve seen so far, still need to give the pvp a go though.

I can assure you that the FPS is solid even on Demo executables which retain a small amount of debugging tools built in..in fact even in extreme combat scenarios with tons of particle effects going off the FPS MAY drop to 55-58 but it is very rare. I made extensive passes of the game and the FPS was at 60 98% of the time.

Did a staff member of a gaming site just state that PCs need to be upgraded each year to play new games? I would certainly hope not, because said staff member is either ignorant or lying (neither would be better than the other). If I build a PC (at the beginning of your console generation) that is 5x more powerful than your fixed-hardware console, if I choose not to upgrade my PC during the life of your console’s generation, I still have 5x more power. As games are designed around your console (99% of the time), and as your power is fixed, why would I need to upgrade my power to play games that continue to be designed for your fixed hardware? See the problem with the “PC gamers need to upgrade every year” argument? They need to upgrade every generation, which, in this case, is looking like ten years.

This is only applicable to the campaign though. People will be spending most of their time with the multiplayer so I think you should have included the paragraph where they say:

Right now, the majority of our testing has concentrated on the campaign mode, where Sledgehammer Games really pushes the boat out visually. However, we briefly dipped into the multiplayer mode on both systems in order to gain some first impressions on resolution and frame-rate. We’ll need to test this much more thoroughly across a range of maps, but initial results suggest that the dynamic resolution switch is disabled on Xbox One, leading to a static 1360×1080 presentation throughout. Meanwhile, PS4 locks to native 1080p. This is significant, bearing in mind that multiplayer is the key focus for many COD fans, but the good news is that overall gameplay frame-rates seem just as solid as our recent testing on the Gamescom and EGX builds – a state of affairs that extends to both systems.

All of the segments I’ve seen have shown dips to 57 or so fps occasionally on PS4. You aren’t going to notice that and it’s not worth transitioning to a different frame rate to compensate. It’s very likely that they run the lower resolutions on xbox one because the dips in 1080p were significantly lower, likely in the 40’s with some hitching, making the difference noticeable. I’ve played the campaign on PS4 and it doesn’t effect it. I’m speaking only for the campaign, I haven’t seen multiplier comparisons myself. I’ve played multiplier on PS4 as well; while I don’t have anything to measure frame rate, I have not noticed any dips.

Honestly, I did not expect CoD:AW to look so good. Genuinely surprised and enjoying it, glad I went back on former promises to avoid the CoD franchise.

LOL Mine is scaled down to 720p and I haven’t noticed any lag since I’ve always ran my PS4 output at 720p which is what I scale my PC games down to as well for performance when streaming on Twitch.

And the lag is so bad,it’s almost unplayable, getting hit after ducking around a corner bullets not registering.no sounds from the sticky bomb after exploding.
Every single game I played had lag,if your a gamer for years it’s easy to notice.
