Evolve’s DLC maps will be free

Rage2014 evolve

Part of what will keep Evolve interesting in the long run is a plan to continue releasing maps to keep players on their toes. New monsters and hunters could also be introduced via DLC as well. However, they will make sure that everyone can always play together, even if they don’t fork out for DLC.

Speaking to IGN, Evolve’s creative director Phil Robb explained that players will be able to play all DLC maps for free:

First thing we [Evolve’s creative leads] said was we can’t break the community up, so all of our maps will be free. We never want anyone to get booted off of a server because they haven’t bought something.

[…] We’ll have characters and monsters, and even if you don’t buy them, if your buddy wants to buy the DLC, that’s cool, and your game will be enhanced through his purchase. So, you won’t be able to play as those characters, but you will certainly be able to play with those characters.

Robb when on to add that for those who pre-order the game, the first monster DLC will be free. Oh look, yet another pre-order bonus. I’m really not a fan of forcing gamers to commit to a game before it launches – who knows what the local servers will be like, or if it will even function locally. I’m not a fan of all this pushing of pre-orders, even if the incentives are this cool. At least this isn’t a pre-order exclusive; even if you don’t order in advance, you can still get the extra monsters and hunters as DLC.

I’m really glad that the maps won’t be hidden behind pay walls. It’s not cool to force groups of friends to buy maps just so that they can continue playing together. At least we can play all the maps without dishing out extra money, and can play with other hunters or monsters, even if you can’t play as them without paying some extra cash.

Are you going to be jamming this with all your friends when it releases, picking up an extra monster by pre-ordering? Or will you wait and see how it does once it launches?

The game looks really awesome, and like @jonahcash:disqus said… I’ll wait till it’s confirmed that it ACTUALLY works here before considering forking out for it.

Trust me it’s not. All it is, is running around chasing after a big bullet sponge. I was bored of it after 2 rounds.

I’m waiting to see how the servers hold up and the expected lag will be like. I really want this game and think it’ll be a lot of fun but with the way games are launching lately I’d rather wait and see.

Not surprised really, seeing as the game doesn’t have much else going for it. This is damage control after poor alpha impressions.

A bit off topic but I was reading an article about Gamestop complaining about digital games being cheaper and free DLC. Apparently it’s hurting the secondhand sales market and they really care about you…and their profits 😉

I tend to switch off when I hear a company moaning about how something new affects their business model negatively, especially when the new thing can benefit consumers.

Like Eskom/Telkom whenever allowing a competitor into the country is mentioned?

“That’ll ruin our monopoly & that’s bad for consumers!”
          “Why?”
          “….We’ll make less money.”
