Global Play coming to Starcraft 2

Blizzard has announced that they’ll be adding Global Play in an upcoming patch in the coming months. This means that players will now be able to access game servers in other regions, expanding the possibilities for eSports.

Global Play will expose players to maps and games that aren’t published everywhere yet and will make it easy to play with friends in other parts of the world. This also means that now players can compete in ladders outside their regions, such as South Africans competing in Asian ladders. This should open up doors to smaller, self-operated tournaments world-wide.

Each region will have separate profile data, meaning that players’ characters, profiles, ladder rankings, progress and friends list, will not carry over from region to region. Blizzard included a couple of more details in the announcement, although it isn’t much, they have stated that they will have more details and answers to frequently asked questions, soon.

More Global Play details:

  • Players will be able to freely switch between regions via the StarCraft II login screen.
  • When your region’s game servers are undergoing maintenance, you may be able to play in a different region that is not down for maintenance.
  • Your game language and user interface will not change when you change regions.
  • Players using Global Play will be subject to the in-game policies of their selected play region.
