What, did you really think that we were the only country that had some llama-level drama in competitive gaming? Not so, as it was recently revealed by Major League Gaming that they had stripped two League of Legends teams of their positions and prize money, after investigating some accusations of collusion.

“MLG regrets to announce that we will not be awarding 1st or 2nd Place finishes for the Summer Championship League of Legends Event. We have determined that there was collusion between the two final teams, Curse NA and Team Dignitas,” Major League Gaming said in a statement.

“This is in clear violation of both the letter and spirit of MLG’s Official Pro Circuit Conduct Rules: ‘competitors may not intentionally Forfeit a Game or conspire to manipulate Rankings or Brackets. As such, both teams have been disqualified, and no placements or prize money will be awarded.”

Overall, that’s $40 000, or over R320 000 that the two teams have had to fork over. It’s unclear as to the exact nature of the collusion however, after the teams agreed to play a League of Legends game that had champions chosen at random, with all the action occurring in a middle lane. Apparently, this was considered to be in violation of the spirit of MOBA, which resulted in Curse issuing the following video apology:

The tip of the iceberg, or an overreaction to a unorthodox match? Who knows, but competitive gaming is certainly looking ugly lately.
