The only certainties in life are death and taxes. Oh, and Peter Molyneux being unable to deliver on his promises. If you’ll recall, Molyneux left the shackles of Microsoft and released a great big block that had people tapping on it for months – only for that block to reveal that he was working on another game in the Populous vein; something new called Godus. Kickstarted in 2012, Molyneux new 22 Cans was set to produce Godus as a mobile game, then bring it to Pc as a successor to Populous. There’s still no PC version.
The chaps at Rock, Paper, Shotgun found a post from one of the game’s developers explaining the terribly shaky situation over at 22 Cans.
“You all want to know what this game is actually supposed to be,” Game designer Konrad Naszynski asked rhetorically on the Godus board. “…well so [do] I,” he said. Like I said, I was never given any indication of what Peter’s vision was of Godus as an end product beyond the kickstarter pitch.
There’s not much point me making grand plans now because I simply don’t know what will be achievable. To be brutally candid and realistic I simply can’t see us delivering all the features promised on the kickstarter page, a lot of the multiplayer stuff is looking seriously shaky right now especially the persistent stuff like hubworld.”
It seem as though not only is an actual PC version of the game unlikely to ever be released, but if it does, it’ll be a hobbled, watered-down version of the game that was promised. It seems that development of the game really is in a poor, poor state.
“Godus is rather confused right now, it plays like an ongoing persistent game without real end point and yet it’s divided up into discrete levels. This is one of the big decisions we will need to make in the next couple of weeks. And again realistically I’m having to ask myself, “how can we turn what Godus is right now into a good complete experience” rather than “how can we deliver on the kickstarter pitch goals”. We are in the process of re-evaluating the ‘big picture’ direction of and end goal of Godus. It’s not an easy or straightforward task, but I will let you know when I can.”
A number of the Kickstarter goals and even stretch goals have yet to be implemented, and it’s unlikely that they ever will be.
So once again – and really, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone – Peter Molyneux is unable to deliver on his promises. It’s all made more egregious by the fact that instead of even attempting to fulfil his end of the bargain, Molyneux is instead chasing more hopeless dreams – by making another game.
His new game, The Trial, will apparently deliver an “experience never seen before”, and will ‘build on feelings and emotions untapped so far.”
We’ve heard it all before, Peter. Anyone who still buys in to the sort of nonsense he peddles and actually gives him money, probably deserves to lose it.

Honestly, is anyone surprised?
The best part is in a couple of weeks he’ll pop up to give advice on how to successfully deliver on promises, or chastise other developers for not doing things the right, ie HIS, way.

We all knew Peter has been lying through his teeth for years now but people still throw money at his projects.
There is a saying about a fool and his money 🙂

I kept trying to remember why I wasn’t buying Godus on early access. I knew there was a reason why I had told myself not to do it, but my brain was too busy retaining random facts about grapefruit to bother with such things. Noooow it all makes sense.

The only thing more constant than DLC in this modern era of gaming is Molyneux spewing some rubbish from his mouth. Only it smells worse and costs as much as your average micro transaction.

why is this guy still making games…. I actually cant remember when last he released a decent game that lived up to all the promises. A kickstarter campaign needs to be launched to stop Molynadda from ever making any form of game again.

Do developers go bad ( like rotten meat or eggs ) after a certain age ? Lord British went to space and also declared that modern developers can’t make games. Will Wright famously said that the only next gen he had seen was the WII when it first came out alongside the PS3 and 360 and his last offering was Spore. Gabe and the ongoing Halflife situation. Randy Pitchford and the bizarre hit and miss nature of his games, Duke and Aliens : Colonial Marines.

Man, the whole HL3 situation baffles me… The only reasons I can think of that they don’t wanna release it is either they have no ideas for the game’s storyline or they simply couldn’t be bothered because they just keep on raking in the money with Steam. Other than that, it makes no sense to not release a game that is pretty much a guaranteed financial success because EVERYONE will pre-order and buy it long before the NDAs expire for review copies…

Oh Peter… Poor, poor Peter… Breaking promises since the 1990’s… Actually, that could make for an interesting TV series – “Breaking Promises. Starring Peter Molyneux as a guy who just can’t help but exaggerate about everything… From the size of the fish he caught to the type of game he’s developing.” :p
