Remake of original Metal Gear by fans gets shut down by Konami

Metal Gear has been an incredibly long running series. How long you ask? Well, 27 years , a year older than I am in fact! 1987 saw the release of the first game, and it has since gone on to spawn a bunch of box filled espionage sequels.  There was a fan remake of the original in the works. It has since been shut down by Konami.

The chaps over at Metal Gear Informer caught up with a Ian Ratcliffe from Outer Haven – the development team working on the project (via Eurogamer):

Unfortunately we can no longer go ahead with the project, it seems like the guys over at Konami couldn’t agree on a decision so had no choice but to shut us down. Even though it’s unfortunate, we’re thankful for all the help and support we’ve received from Konami, MGInformer, Kotaku etc. Especially the fans.

It’s a bit strange, especially considering that Konami did approve the project initially. Outer Haven even secured David Hayter, the original voice of Snake to work on the project. He can be heard in this trailer which was released following the canning of the project.

Ratcliffe also mentioned a number of other professionals who were working on the project:

  • Adhem Belkhadra from Ubisoft (Gears of War, Just Dance, the Cursed Crusade, etc.) working on the level mapping.
  • Kaue Lemos from Insane Games (Earth Under Seige, Bubble Up, etc.) working on the sound effects.
  • Orion Acaba (Fire Emblem, Infamous series, etc.) working on the voice acting.
  • Paul Eiding (Roy Campbell) was also on board in a cameo.

Besides that we had a guy from Sony’s XDev team working with us but left due to availability and we had interested from ATV/Sony Music Publishing who wanted to provide the games soundtrack

It’s a pity really, not because I’m sad to see a remake of the original Metal Gear vanish, but rather that I’m sad to see a development team lose a whole project that they had clearly put a fair amount of time and resources into. What reasoning do you think Konami had for cancelling the game? People have been speculating that they may want to actually take on the project themselves.

Perhaps the problem is not one or the other but the co-incidence of the two? 🙂

Publisher’s are strange animals – I get protection of IP but sometimes some things are OK to let people do. It is hardly going to damage your IP; heck ask to be informed if worried. But goodwill can actually enhance your product as fans rarely screw it up! Unlike some made for game movies and made for movie games, etc.

Mmm, not cool. I know the IP belongs to Kojima etc, but I think he could have backed this himself and come across as a pretty cool chap.

The problem with this is that Kojima himself has a pretty unique vision when it comes to his games. So either they’re already working on a remake or their visions clashed. I know it seems like a dick move but yeah…Its a risk you take when fan remaking something

Yup true they did. Something must’ve happened. There are so many possibilities hey, but like I said its a risk. It was never a contracted agreement or anything. they just gave the ok to continue

Wonder what’s going to happen to the Italian dev team behind the fan-made Resident Evil 2 remake? I’m hoping Capcom stays the hell away from them. The remake looks epic.
