Ubisoft DRM limits become absurd

Its safe to say that no one likes Digital Rights Management. A system wherein publishers can protect their properties, DRM is a rather intrusive and irritating method to combat piracy, and it’s here to stay unfortunately.

But that’s fine, we can live with those gripes and complaints, as long as we get to play our favourite games. And we want those games to look their best, don’t we, so we need to upgrade our gaming rigs for maximum visual entertainment.

Except doing that just might see you locked out of your own game.

The team at Guru3D found out the hard way about the anti-piracy measures, as it seems that the DRM is unable to tell the difference between having a new computer and upgrading a single piece of hardware.

After having installed three copies of Anno 2070,the maximum allowed with the DRM, the team placed a new GPU into their rig for review purposes, and then found out that such an action resulted in them being kicked and locked out of the game.

The developer of the game, Bluebyte, allowed for it to be unlocked after Guru3D contacted them, but Ubisoft has yet to comment on the issue. Looks like a DRM patch is in order, or maybe you could, y’know, just not upgrade your PCs and play games in a sub-standard resolution while Ubisoft pretends that everything is hunky-dory.

It’s only a minor DRM issue, right?
