In case you don’t know what’s going on, let me quickly get you up to speed. An Uncharted movie is in the works. David O. Russell (Three Kings, The Fighter) was at the helm and wanted to make it a family-oriented movie with Mark Wahlberg and Robert DeNiro that had pretty much nothing to do with the game.

He is no longer on the job, thank goodness. So who is the new guy again and what does he plan for the movie?

Well. the man on the job is director Neil Burger, who you may know as the man responsible for this year’s Bradley Cooper / Robert DeNiro flick, Limitless.

He doesn’t want to take a game with a complete story and change it to be completely something else with the same actor that he likes to cast in all his other movies, no… he wants to keep his ideas close to that of the game and keep it fresh.

In an interview with CraveOnline, he was asked about if he would be going back to a lot of David O. Russell’s work, to which he replied:

“No, I haven’t seen his screenplay on it. Mainly we’re beginning from scratch and going back to the videogame. Because there’s a lot of cool stuff, actually, from the videogame, if you know it…”

Yes you read that right. This guy, who has obviously proven that he knows what he is doing with films, seems to also understand the idea behind taking a game with rich characters and an awesome story and move it over to the silver screen.

He continues, saying:

“It’s really one of the most cinematic videogames, and one that has really developed characters. So, you know, there’s a lot of cool, really intense things that, if they work for the film’s story, I want to use them.”

Now as we all know, Uncharted bares more than a few resemblances to old franchises like Tomb Raider and the legendary Indian Jones franchise, so you would be wondering how he plans on differentiating his movie from them.

“Well, I think Indiana Jones is, you know, fantastic. The grandfather of all those movies. But I think Indiana Jones is nostalgic. It takes place in the 1930s, and the later ones are a little bit later, and it kind of plays on that nostalgia.

Whereas Uncharted is very much up to the minute, of the moment. It’s very “now” and contemporary and it has this sort of rough and very intense feel that a movie like The Bourne Identity has. It’s really up to date in its own way. The Bourne Identity isn’t your father’s Cold War movie and this is a very different kind of treasure hunt movie. It’s very real and it has kind of an insane, wild feeling that comes out of the character; Nate being this con man and a bit of a hustler, living by his wits, ballsy and capable of anything.”

And for all of you wondering… yes, he is aware of the campaign to get Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake but says that it’s way too early to even start thinking about roles.

So what do you think? Is there hope for the Uncharted film? I have to be honest when I say that I like what I’m seeing/hearing so far.
