I love playing LoL, mostly because there’s no pause option. Don’t start a game if you can’t commit to the time it’s going to take to complete it. Sure, sometimes life happens, but most of the time people pause for no good reason. So, what excuses would you deem acceptable?
Much worse than a kill steal, this pic shown off over on Dota Talk seems like a valid excuse to pause a Dota game:
Okay, so having a theif in the house is a valid excuse. But what if the player has spawned human minions? Are crying babies an acceptable reason to pause? We all have real lives outside of a game, and yet we enter into games with others to escape and enjoy entertainment together. Pausing certainly ruins that immersion, not just for the person pausing, but for all the people trying to enjoy a multiplayer experience. What have been your reasons for pausing or going AFK, or do you only leave in the case of a home invasion?

Im not too concerned as to the reason why, what needs to become etiquette would be INFORMING folk that you are AFK/MIA. Way way way too often are games left in limbo because jan pierewiet just bailed. I get line drops, and that you can validate (on some clients) but for the most part, I dont think its acceptable to just bail without notice.

I don’t think there’s any reason why everyone else has to wait for you online. If you’re busy or something comes up that’s cool – go deal with it. Quit, and come back when you’re ready. But don’t tell everyone else they have to wait around for your convenience. I’m not interested in staring at a pause screen because you have a runny tummy. #StayStrongJustin.

This is one reason why I love GTA Online… no pausing.
But people just pause and go AFK without warning, or in games that can’t be paused like WoW they just go AFK and then it’s your healer and the group wipes
Good reasons would include:
1. Toilet break
2. A Quicky
3. Getting a smoke
4. Getting a beer
5. Thief in house
6. Passing out
7. Death
And that’s all. 😛

The only reason (besides something extreme such as that) that I think is valid is when a player disconnects and everyone should wait for them to return. In that case, it irritates me when people unpause.
Certain extreme cases are valid, such as “my child just shot his/her dog in the eye with a bb gun, please wait” but yeah. Pausing to get a drink or change your underwear, or giving no reason at all is not ok.

People forget that too often. But in the team games I’ve watched, they’re usually rather polite about a good reason to pause, such as resetting modem for lag, and dc’s and stuff. But in general, they don’t pause for stupid shit. And only ever at the start of the game.

So, like, I don’t mind waiting for someone when they say ‘brb someone at door’ or ‘have to let the dog out’ etc etc etc but when people are having interweb issues, yeah ok fine lets pause once, but then the oak gets dc’d every 2 minutes and people expect you to sit and wait?
