Uncharted 4 is “the end of an era” for Naughty Dog

Uncharted 4 (1)

Uncharted, a game franchise which features Indiana Jones 2.0 running around the screen as if he had a massive case of the trots yet again, is coming to an end next year. Noses shall run and tears will be shed. And that’s just Naughty Dog that I’m talking about, as the studio comes to the end of a very significant era with Uncharted 4.

“We get more and more that feeling of this definitely [being] the end of an era for us as a studio,” game co-director Neil Druckmann said to Official PlayStation Magazine via GamesRadar.

We’ve been with this franchise for almost ten years now from inception all the way to this point. Luckily, we don’t get too much time to dwell on that feeling because we’re so busy, but every once in a while… you know? I remember when Bruce and I came onto the project.

A few weeks later we pitched a pretty new story to the team, kind of like a new direction for the project.

A lot of things were pretty rough and just slotted in, so there was an ending but it wasn’t as well defined, and at some point we defined more of the [plot] thread and a more definitive ending, and we did a second pitch for the team.

That melancholic realisation even extended itself to the motion capture room, as eyes watered up more than my peepers did when I watched Shawn Michaels retire Ric Flair with Sweet Chin Music at Wrestlemania 24. Dammit, it was real to me!

“You could tell people in the room were just getting emotional as we were discussing the specifics of how this series is going to end,” Druckmann said.

That was one of those moments where you felt the excitement and anticipation for our fans to experience this, but a little bit of sadness because it’s ending.

The other day we finished motion capture with Emily Rose (Elena) and Richard McGonagle (Sully), and some people got teary-eyed in the room because they’ve been part of this project for many, many years now and it’s wrapping up.

Uncharted has pretty much defined Naughty Dog over the last decade. Sure, they’ve had other games between Uncharted sequels, but it’s the Nathan Drake series that has defined them this generation, proving that they’re more than just a Jak and Daxter studio.

  1. I don’t think they will kill off Nathan, the franchise has always been light and positive with an age 12 rating. I am worried that they are making the 4th game all dark and broody. But dam, that 20 minute set piece from the demo was EPIC!!!

HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY LITTLE NES, and it still works 🙂

So I have been playing the uncharted remaster collection on PS4 what a game! I’ve never played any of them before so it is such an awesome experience to do all 3 in one go. Pacing of the story for me is the best thing about it you get so into it that you forget you playing a game it is like an movie the story grips you and before you know it you played 3 hours non stop:)

Game has it’s problems of course the controls and the cover system is actually not that great especially in 2 with the train sequence horrible controls. Graphics are very average they ok but for an old PS3 game it looks very good!!!

But all that doesn’t matter as the game is still one of the best I ever played, the story and pacing of the game is sooo brilliant like the Last of Us was an masterpiece of linear story telling! Now add better cover system and graphics in 4 and it could be even better that Last of us:)

If you owned a PS3. You’ve played Uncharted, because it was a must have. Personally my eyes never watered up as much as when Brock ended Undertakers streak at Wrestlemania.

Bought the Killzone Bundle for my PS3 and got lucky as Uncharted 1 was also in the box, though only played 1 and 3, 1 blew me away the first time

Uncharted is where Tomb Raider took a backseat and Sony took advantage of the situation whilst also moving the genre forward but I think at the third iteration, similar to Gears 3, you can feel the novelty has worn thin.

PS: That’s where you bring in the BFG!

I just hope that they don’t fall into the open world trap. I don’t want to ride anything to go and find the story. I want the story in my face the whole way through like they did it in 1-3.
