Konami begins mobile policies with MGS V microtransactions?

MGSV

Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain has many things to make fans of the franchise happy. It looks incredible and has Hideo Kojima’s last hurrah at Konami, it’s poised to do incredibly well. Lately, though, Konami has been making some decisions that aren’t making gamers too happy, and it might just get a whole lot worse.

Over on the Italian PlayStation store, fans can pre-order Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (thanks IGN). According to the listing:

Acquisti in-game opzionali

Even my rudimentary Italian tells me that this means it includes the option for in-game purchases. I tried to find similar listings on other versions of the PlayStation Store, but the various stores around the world were down at the time of writing (I will continue to check and update if this changes).

Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain includes in-game currency called Gross Military Product (GMP) that’s used to upgrade your base. During recent previews, journalists reported that certain features couldn’t be used due to a lack of PSN connection. This combined with the possibility of optional in-game purchases implies that real money might be used to upgrade the Mother Base.

Konami has stated that they plan to move towards mobile rather than console gaming, something that marks a continuing swing away from Japan for console software dominance. While plenty of recent games are including microtransactions as a means of milking lazy players speeding up progression, it’s still a sad thing to hear about in a game like MGS V. Here’s hoping it’s all just a nasty typo or rumour, but I have a bad feeling that Diamond Dogs might cost as much as real diamonds.

So did Gran Turismo with their Prologue games.

Besides all I did was wait for it to become cheaper, hence I was pretty excited when I downloaded it though PS+

    Darn microtransactions ruining gaming…
Not just for “lazy” gamers as the author of this lazygamer article (Zoe) suggests. People with backlogs can’t be blamed for wanting to speed through games without grinding.

And more importantly, many/most games with micros REQUIRE players to buy them to be able to just finish the game (e.g. Let’s say you have a maxed out character with 100 HP, you’re fighing a boss with 101 HP, the boss always attacks second and always deals 100 damage. Max damage the player can do is 100. Microtransactions let you change your damage cap to 105…) Let’s hope MGSV won’t be like that. Other types of micros in full-priced games should also be banned but are more acceptable.

2 Hours… LOL!!! Go to any BT Games there’s probably 12 copies regardless of platform available at every store.

You can finish this “game” in like 20 minutes, if you really take your time.

I have lost all interest in this franchise. I tried booting up Snake Eater and then remembered just how shit and convoluted the control scheme was. Its dated BAD.

As for MGS 4, it was ahead of its time for story telling in great cinematic set pieces but has also dated badly.

Konami are going to ring as much out of their flag ship title before moving over to slot machines.

Still looking forward to see if Hideo Kojima has been removed from the end credits.
