Dammit, I do love me some Pokémon games. I’ve still got the majority of my game cartridges, and will most likely lament that I have wasted far too much of my life on those games, when I finally kick the bucket. But in the meantime, I’m more than happy to pump in an average of 60 hours per game, when a new generation of pocket monsters arrives on a Nintendo device. And this year, I’ll probably do so while yelling “FAIRIES”, constantly.
At a Pokémon E3 presentation, game director Junichi Masuda explained that the reasoning behind the new type introduction, the first in 14 years, was to help rebalance the game as dragons had become far too dominant lately;
As of right now, the dragon type is at an advantage. But nobody wants us to weaken the dragon type, of course. So we decided to come up with something that could really go up against the dragon type….we’re hoping that by introducing it, we’re going to restore balance, make it a more balanced game.
That extra type does add a wrinkle to the game, as only Ice-type and Dragon-Type moves could hurt dragons. At the conference, a new dragon was also shown off, which takes a few design cues from bats apparently:
As well as new five-on-one Pokémon horde encounters, sky battles and the revelation that Pokémon X and Y takes place in France. Or at least a facsimile of it. The game is out on October 12, and this year looks to have several big changes to the formula.
And now to wait for the inevitable PETA response…

At the conference,Masuda mentioned that those specific Pokemon won’t become pure Fairy types, but they will have access to their unique moves, via TMs and natural growth.

I’d love to see a real life battle between a fairy and a dragon, a dragon would rip the fuckers head off, as if fairy type is the type to be strong against dragons. That’s just a fucking ridiculous idea, fucking fairy type. If I had a dick, i’d tell that type to suck it. It’s the only Pokemon type I have a problem with too. Couldn’t they come up with something a little realistic? What’s the fairies going to do? Throw glitter at the dragons?
