Splatoon sells over one million

It would be polite to say that Nintendo’s puppet-friendly E3 conference left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. If you had any faith in the company clinging onto the Wii U, it was quickly dashed with a lacklustre line-up for the rest of the year, and even more silence around the new Legend of Zelda. But hey, at least we know Splatoon isn’t going to die anytime soon.

That’s because Nintendo would be out of their minds to abandon a new IP that has already managed to sell over a million copies worldwide. The exclusive inky shooter was a hit in May despite being launched only two days before the end of the month, and the sales didn’t exactly slow down thereafter. Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime seemed ecstatic about the performance of the kid/squid multiplayer shooter.

“Ever since Splatoon launched on May 29 in the United States, we’ve seen thousands of people go online to have fun in this colourful, chaotic competition. This milestone puts us in a nice position as we prepare to launch 11 more exclusive Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games before the end of the year…”

Splatoon sold neatly half a million in America alone, with the territory snagging 476,000 copies. Japan was next in line with 386,000, while Europe rang in with an impressive 230,000. From there the numbers decline, with Australia and New Zealand only managing 20.000 between them. A far cry from the figure locally though, which I suspect suffered from the lack of any real hardware support from Nintendo over the past few years.

Regardless, it’s great to see one of the finest titles of this year getting the sales recognition it truly deserves. Splatoon is consistently being updated with more content, so right now there isn’t a better time to hop on board. Once you’re a squid, you can never be a kid again.

Did anybody notice at just how bad ass Naughty Dogs U4 demo was? Its a technical masterpiece. Those shadows casting on top of umbrellas and casting the colour sappier underneath. The collision detection makes the Euphoria engine in GTA look dated.

Now the question is, do we want to see every single object from folding sand bags to rolling bottles with their own weight and gravity from dynamic explosions to procedural destruction get cut to raise the frame rate from 30 to 60.
