NAG’s redesigned rAge mascot looks much better

Roxy (2)

If you’re familiar with the Really Awesome Gaming Expo, then you’re no doubt familiar with their mascot, Roxy. She’s been the face of the biggest gaming convention in the country for quite a few years now, adorning the halls of the Vodacom Dome and advertising material, helping to sell the event. This year, Roxy got a redesign that didn’t exactly gel with the industry and the public, resulting in another redesign that looks far more family-friendly now.

The original design for Roxy by artist Caroline Vos wasn’t warmly received a few weeks ago. Roxy had a thong that was so far up her bum that it looked like it was doing a cavity search and a spine that would make a contortionist jealous. Here’s the original image:

Roxy (1)

And here’s the new and improved Roxy, a simple redesign that hits all the right notes for me, though she still has a spine that would make a contortionist jealous

Roxy (2)

“The latest version of our rAge mascot, Roxy, caused a bit of a stir after we published updated pictures of her recently,” NAG boss Michael James said to My Broadband. “When we commissioned the artwork this is more or less what we asked for: we need Roxy in space, wearing an outlandish futuristic outfit, fighting off some alien monster.”

According to James, the final decision on Roxy’s design could have had some more thought applied to it:

For us, Roxy has always been a strong female character in a world dominated by male stereotypes, and she takes no crap from aliens, zombies, and so on. This is how we’ve always thought of her. rAge has always been a family-friendly show. We also should have taken into consideration all the current thinking on female characters in video games.

We’re really sorry to those people who took offence to the original Roxy artwork.

I like it! It’s a nice touch-up, that in many ways, makes for a better piece of art from Vos. Hell, I’d gladly hang a poster of Roxy in her new look, on my wall, so Kudos to NAG for their efforts on addressing this issue. What do you think?

To be honest, the second is not much of an improvement on the first. Still a sexualized female in a ‘look at this bod’ pose. Why can’t we have a group of different people I don’t know, doing something bat shit crazy, like playing a game or something?

This is why we can’t have nice things – next the rabid crazies will demand that all mascots must be neutral, genderless jelly babies – because we shouldn’t offend anyone with a gratuitous display of beewbs, bum or an oversized cod piece.

This whole mascot saga left me with a massive facepalm. Stop shaming the female form! The Banana Frog supports art and the creativity of artists. Bikini armour for all female characters! etc. etc.

      1) There’s no need to bring religion in to this. It’s very offensive and completely uncalled for.
      2) As a piece of art it’s awesome. But as a mascot for a massive gaming convention where the way woman are portrayed is currently one of the biggest issues in the industry, it’s just not smart. It was a bad idea and they should have gone for something other than pin-up.

Raptor, you are missing my point.
Whenever I see articles such as these, it gets my blood boiling. Why?
Because it is taking what is one of God’s most beautiful creations, her being a woman, and making it out as something vile. Something to be fought against. Brought down via the flames of revolution and change.
Why is that? Do you know the comic book Red Sonja? You know why she wears a brassierre and skimpy bottoms? Not because she is out to corrupt children and pollute their minds and only give people over the age of 11 boners.
Because she is that good a combatant that she does not need a full suit of armor going into battle.
Is that now what an empowered, I am sure of myself woman sounds like? Or is that someone created merely so I can do two things I like at the same time: namely read comics and masturbate?
Please man. If you want the gaming community to change, then you need to change your mind. Think like an adult. Make up reasons other than some sexualised thing as to why a girl is clad like she is.
It is called using your imagination.

          • Ranting Raptor

            May 12, 2015 at 15:02

Again with the insults dude? Now I’m not adult? Now I look at the image and just want to masturbate?

Honestly I expected more from you.

The whole thing doesn’t go about how she makes men feel but rather what the current industry climate is.

Currently the biggest fuss is being thrown up on how woman are portrayed in gaming and treated in the industry.

Stories of woman being passed up for promotions for being woman, woman being shown as only needing to be skinny and skimpy dressed in games. The stories and issues are all over at the moment. Is a lot of it blown out of proportion? Of course it is!

But NAG, being one of the biggest pushers of local gaming on an international level with rAge (Seriously it’s the biggest gaming convention in SA and one of international standards) should have taken in to consideration what the current issues around the topic are.

Yes, the whole industry needs to grow up a bit as they are overly sensitive. Both sides, men and woman, but this is not the way to do it. To tout a skimpy clad pin up girl is not helping the situation it’s making it worse and throwing mud in the faces of people in the industry who legitimately feel hard done by or that woman aren’t represented correctly. It’s giving them the middle finger and saying that they don’t care.

Show me where I am insulting you??? Please do.
            I beg of you.
If a woman is being overlooked for a promotion or some such thing, it’s got buggerall to do with the fact that there is an artwork out there showing a girl showing some skin.
It is because she is working for a dickhead. Plain and simple.

            Are. You. Serious?

You’re telling me that the way MEN represent women has nothing to do with why women get passed over for promotions (mostly by MEN) in a boys club industry? Are. You. Friggin. Serious?

There is an entire SECTION of cultural studies DEDICATED to this. And you brush it off without so much as care in the world? Dude. Entire regions of the world are typified by simplistic and often offensive imagery associated with those people.

If men consider women to be nothing more than sex objects, how could they EVER take them seriously in the workplace? If they’re taught to treat women not as human beings but as objects of desire then how can you ever expect men to see them as truly “equal”. How we “represent” women in gaming impacts how young boys especially come to learn about, deal with, engage with women. If they only see them as sex objects they grow up to be the great scourge of humanity that decides to forcibly take away the vote.

This. Is. Bigger. Than. A. Picture.

            May 12, 2015 at 15:42

            No. Are you serious?
So using your argument: Hugh Hefner puts out a magazine containing pictures of naked women and now I have an excuse to act like a dick? (pardon the pun)
            Please!
That is such a sheep mentality and I find it quite offensive to be honest.
I, Dutch Matrix, take responsibility for my own actions, and do not blame society for it if I fuck up or act like a dick.
Can I tell you something? The advice I got from my dad regarding girls was: “Son, do not date a girl. Just fuck her and get it over and done with.”
Lucky for me I had a brain. You know what my fiance told me why she got involved with me, and why she is still engaged to me?
            Manners.
I open the door to the car for her.
I carry the groceries and shopping.
I carry her hand bag in the mall.
I treat other women with respect.
In short, she calls me a gentleman.

Porn is an adult rated service. It is also clearly defined as pornography. I don’t see any good parents advocating on behalf of their thirteen year old watching it. Nor do we base our ideas on how we engage with the opposite sex based upon pornography either. Thus it’s a very poor analogy indeed. Any argument by analogy needs to have a like to like similarity before we can use the example to go forward. And this is nothing like that.

Pornography is the literal consumption of sexual activity.

And dude. There IS a sheep mentality. Of course there is. And it’s good you’re offended by it. It’s horrible, it’s wrong, and it needs to go. But we need people to wake up. People ARE informed by things that may seem silly to YOU. But this is how OTHERS learn about things. Or learn to engage with things. And there is a bloody Century of social studies and psychology that backs all of this up. You and I can take responsibility for our own actions. Yay. So what? There is a large proportion of our society which consume images in different ways to the way in which you do.

You think we’re being overly sensitive? No. You’re being naive. You’re willfully ignoring research that symbols influence societal actions, preferences, etc. It’s common knowledge that the way we present women to the world in media has actively changed the “prefered” body type. We are creatures of consumption and we’re damn good at it.

Society is what it is. And perhaps we all need to do a little more sociology, psychology, and social anthropology before we start thinking we can talk for “society”. Because it’s pretty clear we don’t all understand what sort of beast we’re dealing with. Nor how consumption and representation works.

          • Dutch Matrix

            May 12, 2015 at 16:05

LoL. Dude, I think we are two brick walls trying to convince one another. I hear what you are saying.
Why are we in a society that sexualises women? Because we, as individuals act that way. If we are going to change that, it is going to be US that have to act more mature.
Doing away with something because we deem it offensive is sending us back in all the progress that we have made.
In conclusion: Was the first Roxy a good mascot for rAge, being a family event and all? I think so.
Children are much more resilient that we give them credit for. A child can compartementalise (please forgive my spelling) in what is acceptable for him and what is not. From a young age.
BUT ONLY if his parents took a hand in his upbringing.
For as much as my Dad could be an asshole at times, he has taught me that drinking is bad. That consumption of porn is not for children. That throwing rocks at passing cars is a bad idea.
And it is lessons I learned from an early age. It is lessons he taught me on the fly most of the times. Like they day I walked into his room, found some naughty mags, tried paging through them and he just went “That is not for kids.”
            And I trusted his judgement.
But okay. As much as I am not going to convince you, you are not going to convinve me that I am wrong.
            🙂

Too lazy to retype my comment from MyGaming so just going to paste it as is here

“I think it needs to be said. The artwork itself, including the original, was amazing. As art it was fantastic.

But with the current state of our industry, where the way woman are portrayed in games; how they are treated in the industry etc; is such a massive debate and sensitive topic, I think NAG missed the whole point of the outcry.

The whole decision to have Roxy portrayed as a pin-up was a big mistake. It’s insensitive to the current state of the gaming industry. Especially when you consider it’s meant to be the mascot of South Africa’s biggest gaming convention with many international eyes on it.

Developers are trying hard to get the whole woman in gaming thing right and NAG pretty much are putting up a mascot that goes against everything people have been fighting against: The sexualisation of woman.

Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t think that was their main intention, nor do I feel that the image is overly sexualised, but unfortunately, in this case, it’s all about the bigger picture and that bigger picture is that Roxy originally (as in the original one with the sword) looked badass and wasn’t overly sexualised but now looks a bit tart.

They shouldn’t have gone for pin-up. That was the mistake.”

    Here is an idea:
Instead of crapping all over a mascot that NAG has decided to use for an Expo THEY are organizing, why don’t all you ninnies go and put up an expo for us, and then put up whatever you deem fit for your expo.
    But NOOOOOO.
It is so easy to crap on work done by someone else.
The irony in all this though, lies in the immediate comparison of the tentacles in the artwork to that of some sad Hentai. “We do not want the womenz to be sexualized. But an Alien tentacle creeping up her leg must be some sort of sexual act!” It kind of makes me wonder just where the perverted minds lie.
And to be honest: I kind of find these types of articles on Lagz, slanting the hard work done by a fellow/sister publication for the benefit of the gaming community in SA to be a bit in poor taste. Guys, NAG is doing a shitload of good for us by doing this.
Why then vilify their work like this?

To be fair, if we all decided to let anyone run anything they pay for the way they want to then we’re on a very very slippery slope. Next thing you know, massive corporations are stamping employees like cattle and paying minimum wage in alcohol. Doing x% good work doesn’t mean you get to do y% bad work, either.

Just because you’re organising something and you’ve made your own mascot doesn’t mean you’re above reproach from the general public and the industry you’re in. Any organisation worth its salt would allow for, even appreciate, public feedback. Plus this is a hypersensitive issue in the gaming community right now and debate in free society is allowed.

And if NAG don’t like that, then they should piss off to North Korea where people and their opinions, thoughts, ideas, are not considered at all.

Why can’t I that is paying for something with my OWN money design something I want to see or have?
And just why is this, the “sexualising” of women in games such a hyper sensitive issue? I’ll tell you why, if you missed my response to Raptor (not being nasty. Maybe you honestly missed it)
It is because we are so immature in our thinking, that the first thing we think of when we see a scantily clad female, is sex.
The only reason she exists in art, games, movies, tv shows and comics is because she is meant to be a boner inducing creation.

No one is saying that you cannot design something you want to see or have. There is a lot out there that people have designed that they’re perfectly entitled to do. It doesn’t mean that we have to support you in doing so. It doesn’t mean we’re not allowed to jump on a bandwagon, shout from the rooftops, and create banners pointing out what we consider to be your poor judgement. There is a current and very important debate about women in gaming (and how they’re represented). It’s a VERY real problem for VERY REAL people. And how you (or others) continue to design or represent women have very REAL effects.

Those people are allowed to be represented. We’re allowed to debate these ideas. We’re allowed to reject forms that are less inclusive, for whatever reason we deem relevant to the conversation. As per your OP, we’re allowed to vilify them for negatively representing a minority group (which women very much are in the gaming community).

As to your “why”, I don’t agree with it. But you’re allowed your opinion. I think it’s significantly more complicated than that and has much deeper roots in our society than your response touches. That you think the last part of your paragraph also deeply saddens me. Because females are not there for male consumption. That very thought sickens me to my core.

I don’t think that women is only there for men’s consumption. I am not THAT shallow.
I AM capable of having a conversation with a woman’s face, and not her boobs.
            Because you know, respect.

          • SargonTheBatpandaOfTI5

You said: “The only reason she exists in art, games, movies, tv shows and comics is because she is meant to be a boner inducing creation.”

That is classic female consumption. That’s exactly what it is. That’s the entire point of feminism right there. You hit the friggin nail on the friggin head. And it’s that point that’s the problem here. It’s. Disgusting. And. It. Has. To. End.

Not just in gaming. Hollywood certainly doesn’t help.

But dude. Yes. Women are gorgeous. Their forms should be appreciated. I agree with you on that. Women are all beautiful in a wide variety of unique ways. The Gods chose well when they chose that form. 🙂

But it’s about time we start to represent all women in gaming. And that we start to grapple with the notion that overly sexualising women in gaming leads to things we don’t want in society. I know too many Westernised men who treat women like dirt because they should be in the kitchen making dinner and doing dishes. And they joke. But under the veil, there is a nugget of belief. There is a real problem out there. And this sort of imagery when we’re trying to have a real conversation about that problem? It’s in bad taste. It’s a very. very. poor decision.

My earlier post with the fat Batman refers.

I am not, despite what my Avatar shows, Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime. I am fat. According to the clever people, I am morbidly obese. (Not as fat as Batman up there.)

Do I now, take my pitchfork and trek to Hollywood and demand that Captain America be played by John Goodman?

            No.

            Why?

Mainly I need the inspiration. I need to see Chris Evans shirtless and go: “Man. Maybe it’s time for me to get off my ass and onto the treadmill. Not because I want his bod, but I want a healthy lifestyle.”

            SO there is that.

            And again, I say this:

I can do one of two things looking at this girl http://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/original/12/127694/2488646-ivy-valentine-soulcalibur-broken-destiny-picture.jpg
I can think she is only good for a shag and nothing else.
            or
I can think: Wow. This woman is so confident in her sword fighting skills that she can parade around in that outfit because she KNOWS I am not going to come close to her in combat.

          • SargonTheBatpandaOfTI5

            May 12, 2015 at 16:09

Being fat should not be glamorised either. It’s medically dangerous to be obese and honestly – I have no problem that that isn’t represented more. Normal bodies (and normal weights) should be appreciated. And this is just not true of women in the way it is for men. Yes, men can still be sexualised (one only has to hear the sighs every single bloody time Thor somehow ends up without his shirt on) but these are done within healthy norms. With healthy weights, etc. And often their armour is functional, not edible strings barely covering anything. 😛

I’m just going to say – bad example. Sorry.

And in real life, it doesn’t matter how good a poorly equipped fighting force is, it’ll lose every. single. time. Thermopyle is the standing case in point. No women in that material would last a single moment in battle. Do you see a particular female knight in Game of Thrones flashing that much flesh? No. Cause you’d be dead very quickly. No matter how good you were.

No man is ever dressed that skimpily, either. 😛

Real life. See. If you want to compare a video game to real life then I am not so sure anymore. (Not referring to you personally)
A video game is still an imaginitive creation. It is not meant to reflect real life. Not always. Sometimes fun, albeit over the top in design and implementation is required if we are to get through life.

Personally i feel all characters should be portrayed as neutral grey blocks with edges that has been beveled faintly.

The neutral grey will make sure no racism occurs, depicting that no color is favored over the other.
The faint beveled edges is to minimize the outfall from portraying either a feminine block, or a manly block. Hard edges will result in the block to look too manly, and if the beveled edges are too round the block will appear too feminine.
