Free Battlefield: Bad Company DLC Maps

By Nick De Bruyne

BFMaps.jpg Remember Battlefield: Bad Company, that game that came out way back when (June or so was it?). Anyway, you will remember that it was actually a lot of fun to play online. Good news is that on Halloween, those DICE blokes released a Community Choice Pack which consists of two DICE chosen maps called Crossing Over and Ghost Town and then also chucked in two maps chosen by the community called Acta Non Verba and Par for the Course. So that's 4 maps to play, absolutely free! To make things even better, Par for the Course still has Golf Carts for you to drive around in. Anyone interested should also know that the maps weigh in at 256MB.

NFS: Undercover – Not looking too shabby after all

By Nick De Bruyne

When I first heard that a new Need for Speed title was on it's way, I wasn't incredibly excited to tell you the truth. I though that Carbon was a step in the wrong direction and I couldn't really bother to comment on what I thought of Pro Street. Underground is however, starting to make me take interest in the franchise again. The trailer is looking pretty fun and EA has even gotten Nissan to debut their new Nissan 370Z in the game. How the car still looked so good after slamming through a wall of cop cars is however, a mystery.

Trailer for a Demo? Apparently so for Mirror's Edge

By Nick De Bruyne

With the Mirror's Edge release date looking closer (November 11) and the demo now available on Xbox Live and PSN, EA has taken a rather strange move and released a trailer for the demo. Kind of like killing two birds with one running shoe. The trailer shows off some of the tutorial gameplay as well as a trainer that is helping our protagonist get back on her feet, almost literally. With some interesting music and editing, the trailer does it's job pretty well and has certainly helped maintain my curiosity about how this game is going to play at the end of the day. It's something different, I'll give it that much.

Lara Croft gets Exclusive Outfits on Xbox Live

By Nick De Bruyne

media.jpeg Now this is quite a strange one. Or maybe not. At a Canadian gaming festival called Festival Arcadia, fashion designers are going to be presenting their latest ideas for Lara Croft on real models. People will then vote, with the winners outfit becoming an exclusive DLC outfit for the new Tomb Raider game. The designer will also pocket a cool $3000. A second outfit will also be picked from entries that have come from gamers, with that outfit also being added as DLC. While I am against the idea of exclusive DLC, especially when it comes to silly things like outfits, I really do think that it is quite cool to get other markets involved in gaming. What do you guys think? Cool or Corny?

Fallout 3 Graphics Comparison

By Nick De Bruyne
October 30, 2008

Last week we had an article shoot through the roof because PSM has said that Fallout 3 does not look as good on the PS3 as it does on the Xbox 360 version. Well to help us make our own minds up, GamesRadar have released a comparison video showing off the two version running side by side. I do apologise for the squashed video but it is the way that they have uploaded it, so it does tend to mess up the graphics somewhat. So take a look for yourself and let us know which one you think looks better. All I can say is that it's looking damn fine on both at the moment, regardless of which one people think looks better.

FarCry 2 – Reviewed – Xbox 360

By Nick De Bruyne

Being Africans ourselves means that our experience of FarCry 2 was always going to be different to those who have never had the chance to see Africa with their own two eyes.... Be it the sounds of familiar birds in the trees, the sunset over the veld or the banter of the Afrikaans mercenaries in the guard posts, you are going to be amazed at exactly how much detail has been added into this game to make it feel like a true African experience, the environment nearly steals the show entirely.... You will run into two major factions in the game and it will be up to you to play them against each other so that you can complete your objective.... If you get 'killed' in battle and your second best buddy is available, they will come and pull you out of the mess you have made and help you clear out the enemies in the area. FC2_Screen_10.jpg Be warned though, any of your buddies get hurt and you are unable to heal them or choose to put them out of their misery then they can die, for good.... The type of shooter that's weapons feel so solid and the action so intense that it reminds of those good old days when gaming meant nothing but playing FPS games on your PC.... FC2_Screen_21.jpg While I am not a fan of developers relying too much on their tech-wizardy to make a game feel fun, it is the exact reason why FarCry2 is a real treat to any shooter fan.... I realised that I didn't really mind that so many missions were similar, the sheer difference that the locations and environmental differences made meant that every single repetitive mission played out in a completely different way.... On the other hand, the first time you manage to silently take out an entire guard post without attracting any attention or alerting any other soldiers, you will feel a deep sense of pride and accomplishment. I say it again, FarCry2 is a shooter, put into a setting that allows you to play as much as you want and experiment with different ways to accomplish goals.... So if you are looking for a fun shooter that you can pick up and play for a long time to come, here it is.... While the multiplayer is quite a lot of fun and plays fairly similarly to the formula seen in the Call of Duty franchise, it does come across as quite obvious that the single player game was the main focus of the developers.... All of the elements in the map editor are taken straight from the disc, which means that they can be easily shared over Xbox Live and PSN because of their small file size because essentially all that other players will be doing will be downloading the configuration settings and placement info.... Say yes and you will have it in a minute or so and can jump straight in. At the end of the map, you can rate it if you want and then decide to keep it or dump it.... With smooth and stunning visuals, amazing sound and the fact that you will never ever leave the first person view, you really will feel like it is you standing under a tree in the African veld, stinking like something that died a few days prior.

Fallout 3 pulling in some massive scores

By Nick De Bruyne
October 29, 2008

As many of you will already know, Fallout 3, created by acclaimed developers, Bethesda SoftWorks, will be hitting South African shelves this Friday. With the current line up of games this season, it has become increasingly tough to decide on which game/games to spend your money on. While Farcry 2 has been quite popular, Fable 2 has seen massive sales and popularity in most regions. So which one to chose? Fallout 3 reviews are pouring out onto the net this week and the game is pulling in a current aggregate of 93/100 on Xbox 360 and PC and 90/100 for the PS3 on Metacritic. Perfect scores (100/100) have been given by some of the major sites and magazines such as 1UP, Gamespy, GamePro, Official Xbox Magazine and EuroGamer which really surprises me considering that a lot of the seem to be unusually negative and cynical when it comes to their review scores. Scrolling down also revealed that the lowest score given for the game was an 80, meaning that even the ones who didn't really like it, still kinda liked it. Is Fallout 3 the (not completely) unexpected overall winner across all platforms of this seasons line-up? With all the rest of the Xbox 360 and PS3 exclusives yet to arrive, we can't really tell yet. What I can tell is that this game looks like it's going to be worth the money and should keep a lot of us happy for quite a long time to come.

Parrots play EndWar, no kidding…

By Nick De Bruyne

Ok, I don't really know how to explain this one, but it's pretty awesome. The guy in this video has actually trained his parrots to play EndWar by teaching them the commands of the game. While he still needs to give them instructions on what to do, the mere fact that the game still has no problem recognising their commands is pretty amazing to say the least. It looks like the developers of EndWar have really done a great job with the system and as we all know, if they didn't, this entire game would be worth nothing.
