Ridge Racer for the Vita is a cheap cash-in

It’s nearly time for a new console launch – and that means a new Ridge Racer. It’s become customary for Namco to put out a new version of everybody’s favourite electronica-fuelled nitro-burning arcade racer with nothing but drift physics, Ridge Racer whenever new hardware becomes available, but its seems like Namco’s starting to get bored, or incredibly lazy.

The Ridge Racer that’ll launch alongside Sony’s new PlayStation Vita is nothing short of disgraceful.

According to Andriasang, Japanese media who’ve had a go at the final build, Ridge Racer for the PlayStation Vita will include just three tracks – Harborline 765, Highland Cliffs and Southbay Docks – all of which have appeared in previous games. Apparently they’ve been unchanged since previous incarnations. The game will also only ship with 5 playable cars.

Namco will be selling the game for slightly cheaper than full-priced Vita games, and will come in at around R350 mark. Of course, they’ll be bolstering the game through – yup, you guessed it – DLC (both free and paid) which makes this seem even more like a nasty cash in. It’ll also be available on the Vita’s PSN store for discounted price at launch for a month or two, after which it’ll be sold at retail price. Sorry Namco, but there’s a new Motorstorm and  a new Modnation that’ll be available on the same day.

To sour things even more, the game runs at 30fps, instead of the 60fps expected on Sony’s beastly new portable. Check it out in the trailer below and let us know what you think. I’ll probably be saddened that I won’t be hearing RIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGEEEEEEEEE RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACER as I boot up my shiny new PlayStation Vita, but I just can’t support this.
