Guitar Hero’s not dead, it’s just pining for the Fjords

Last year, we said goodbye to Guitar Hero, the rhythm game rock band simulator from Activision. The franchise, and indeed the genre itself had been run in the ground, thanks to oversaturation and the resulting general gamer indifference.

Apparently it’s not dead, just resting – and though there are no titles in the series planned for the foreseeable future, it will be making a comeback.

“Actually, just to clarify, we’re just putting Guitar Hero on hiatus, we’re not ending it. We’re releasing products out of the vault – we’ll continue to sustain the channel, the brand won’t go away. We’re just not making a new one for next year, that’s all,” said Activision’s Dan Winters to GI.Biz.

It;s all in the wording, you see. Activision’s statement about the death of Guitar Hero said “Due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011.” See? Just for 2011! They’d never let a cash cow like that just die, would they?

Fear not, members of plastic bands; your collection of faux instruments wont be rendered completely obsolete any time soon.
