Could there be a DINO RIDERS movie in the works?

In the last few years we have been treated to seeing some of our fond childhood memories brought to life on the big screen with movies like Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Battleship, G.I. Joe and even The Smurfs. Most of these have movies have enjoyed big successes at the box office and with merchandising – even if they weren’t exactly critical successes – while others were just not that big a hit.

A few of those are the products of toy giant Hasbro, and now Tracking Board is reporting that rival Mattel (the guys that own Barbie) are now also rumored to be having a go at Hollywood and are looking to adapt their popular animated show and Dino Riders toy range into a feature film.

In case you have forgotten about Dino Riders here is a little recap on the story.

In a futuristic war, the evolved human race known as the Valorians are trying to save the galaxy from Krulos and his army of mixed-species Rulons. In an effort to escape a Rulon onslaught, Questar, the leader of the Valorians, turns on a machine that takes them all back in time to prehistoric Earth. Once there, the war continues with the Valorians using their psychic abilities to convince dinosaurs to aid them, and the Rulons using machinery to enslave dinosaurs to fight for them.

It’s easy to get excited about these types of projects when nostalgia comes into play and Mattel could be sitting with a serious cash cow if this movie gets made. We have already seen Universal turn a fat profit this year in Jurassic World and even though critics had no love for Michael Bays Transformers: Age of Extinction last year, that movie still went on to be the highest grossing film of 2014.

orthenerexDTIf you look at the success of those two movies alone it would certainly seem like a great time to develop this movie, as audiences certainly seem to love dinosaurs. Attach lasers to said dinosaurs and make them part of an intergalactic war and well, do I really need to say more?

How soon could this be happening? Well there is no script in place for the movie as producers are still looking for the right person to give their take on the story and there are also no studios attached to the project –  although that shouldn’t be a major problem. Universal currently are the distributors for Mattel’s home-video adaptions like Barbie and Monster High so they would seem a good fit.

Would you like to see the Dino Riders movie happen or would you rather leave them in that happy place in the corner of your mind? I say bring on the laser-wielding T-Rex!

I won’t say no to this, dinosaurs with freaking lasers are as good sharks with freaking lasers attached to their heads

Being a somewhat insane fan of this series…I don’t think it’ll translate easily into a movie.
But I do believe it’s possible with the right crew.
Just please…for the love of all the holy dinosaurs…do not use Michael Bay.

Man, this could be epic! And seeing those toys REALLY takes me back – even still got some of them packed away in a box somewhere in my parents home (along with GI Joes and old-school TMNT). lol 🙂

As an interesting side note, did you know the series was an afterthought? Mattel had created the toy range first, but then didn’t know how to market it… Then the idea of making a series based on the new toys came to light and they launched the 2 (the series and toy range) in tandem. That’s why the series was relatively short, compared to the norm back then – made in a hurry as a marketing ‘gimic’. The rest is dino-loving history!

Has everybody else never heard of Dino Riders? Is it because they are way too young and born in and/grew up in the 90’s that doesn’t know what that cartoon series is?

Yeah, it’s an 80’s thing. I grew up with them and loved them.
