With Marvel”s crazy looking space opera Guardians of the Galaxy less than two months away, you”re either already hyped up to gills to see a talking raccoon and a humanoid tree smash space stuff or you”re not. I mean, if that epic last trailer didn”t convince you yet that this is the movie for you, then nothing probably will. That doesn”t mean that the comic book movie studio won”t give it one, or if I know movie marketing, ten more shots at winning you over, and they”re starting off with this first TV spot, that gives us some new footage (including Lee Pace”s Ronan using the power of his Universal Hammer) as well as a nice rundown of just who the Guardians are.

An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel”s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy”s fate in the balance

Along with the TV spot comes some news about Thanos, the purple-faced big-bad that has been pulling all the strings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As was recently revealed, Josh Brolin will be providing the voice of Thanos in Guardians as well as Avengers: Age of Ultron. With Brolin only joining this late in the game, you have to wonder just how much of the Mad Titan we”re actually going to see in Guardians. Well, Variety has gone and dug up the answer to that question, shedding some light on his involvement. This may be considered a slight SPOILER by some, so I”ve whited out the text. Highlight with your mouse to read it.

Though Thanos didn”t appear until the very end of The Avengers, Vulture has learned that he”ll emerge in the first act of Guardians of the Galaxy. Thanos pokies online will be communicating remotely via hologram for most of the film — a move the Mad Titan likely cribbed from the equally enigmatic Emperor Palpatine in The Empire Strikes Back — though he does show up in the purple flesh for a scene that also features Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), who do Thanos”s bidding and serve as the primary adversaries in Guardians. Still, though Thanos is only briefly glimpsed throughout Guardians, his presence is palpable throughout: Characters reference him often and fearfully, and he has familial ties to Gamora (Zoe Saldana), our green-skinned female lead.

And you may have noticed that beautifully designed, Star Wars inspired poster up top. It”s part of a series of new posters for the film that a group known as the Poster Posse has just unveiled. Matt Ferguson”s Guardians of the Star Wars Galaxy may be the highlight, but there”s plenty more to enjoy, making use of all different kinds of styles.

Guardians of the Galaxy is written/directed by James Gunn, and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Karen Gillan, Gregg Henry, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker and Vin Diesel. It”s scheduled for release on August 1, 2014.
