Before Twilight took over, there was another franchise out there that used Vampires and Werewolves. And it kicked all kinds of ass. That, and I may have a strange attraction to actress who run around in the tightest latex outfit possible. Underworld was the name of the series, and it was a bloody good bunch of movies that crafted some fine action escapism. It’s been a while since we’ve seen one of those films. So of course it’s getting a reboot.
The latest crack at making Vampires and Werewolves cool again comes from Lakeshore Entertainment. According to THR, Cory Goodman will write the script, with the next film supposedly being Underworld: Next Generation. While that won’t feature supernatural monsters in space (Boooo), the film will instead possibly focus on the hybrid daughter of Selene and and Michael, who happen to be from the Nosferatu and Lycan camps of species.
So more of a soft reboot then, which ain’t bad at all. That at least allows Kate Beckinsale to reprise her role as Selene, while leaving the ass-kicking to a new heroine. And I’m quite fine with that. Here’s the original Underworld trailer and synopsis if you feel like a stroll down memory lane.
In the Underworld, Vampires are a secret clan of modern aristocratic sophisticates whose mortal enemies are the Lycans (werewolves), a shrewd gang of street thugs who prowl the city’s underbelly. No one knows the origin of their bitter blood feud, but the balance of power between them turns even bloodier when a beautiful young Vampire warrior and a newly-turned Lycan with a mysterious past fall in love. Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman star in this modern-day, action-packed tale of ruthless intrigue and forbidden passion all set against the dazzling backdrop of a timeless, Gothic metropolis.
