Hunger Games Trailer #2 – Against my better judgment, I still want to see this

I have a hard time recommending  Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games novels to people. The first book is surprisingly good, and plays out almost like a teenaged version of The Running Man. However, the books that follow are nowhere near in quality as the first. Bookstores should actually give you a complimentary cheese platter when you purchase the last two novels, as they’re nothing but whine fests.

Yet, knowing this, I am still looking forward to seeing the new film adaptation. The cast and crew behind this appeal to me and I hope that they can tweak the scripts of the inevitable sequels for the better. Either that or movie houses are going to have to hand out barf bags along with the 3D glasses

Here’s the new trailer, which shows that even if the movie does end up sucking, at least you have a decent performance from Jennifer Lawrence to look forward to:

Here’s the official blurb:

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

I saw the first theatrical trailer and although it looks like a really good move, it still seems like a rinse & repeat of Battle Royale. Futuristic society where kids kill each on reality TV isn’t exactly a common genre

Well the reason it looks like a copy of Battle Royale is because… Well, it is. Suzanne Collins struck it lucky in the fact that the core target group of her books, is unlikely to be aware of ultra-violent Japanese film from 12 yrs ago.
