Movie poster icon Drew Struzan is headed back to the canvas

If there’s one thing missing from the movie industry these days, it’s posters that capture the imagination. Gone are the days of hand-painted and air-brushed posters, images that sledge-hammered the excitement for an upcoming feature into our fanboy brains.

And some of the best posters ever came from Drew Struzan, the man behind such cinematic works of art such as the Star Wars and Back to the future trilogies, The Thing and Big trouble in Little China. He’s officially retired from the easel though, to paint no more masterpieces.

Oh wait, he’s totally making a comeback.

Back in 2008, Struzan put down the paintbrush, after forty years of work. “I am well pleased to have been able to give a gift of beauty and peace through my artwork to so many throughout the world. Now I have laid down the burden and have peace and happiness as the reward for my day’s labor,” Struzan wrote back then.

Now while Struzan may not be producing work any more posters, his current and past work still sells quite well, something that poster shop and regular emptier of Kervyn’s bank account Mondo found out, after they were given permission to release prints of his Frankenstein and The Thing posters.

Those sheets sold well, so well in fact, that Struzan has once again donned his artists smock in order to create new content. Slashfilm spoke to Mondo creative director Justin Ishmael, and learnt that the old master was preparing himself for some top secret, new posters;

He’s so excited to be working with us that, I don’t want to give too much away, but we basically got him to come out of retirement. He’s going to start doing new stuff.

Not just old stuff. ‘I’m sitting down and thinking of new ideas for new stuff that you guys have.’ So that’ll be happening, hopefully, later on this year.

There’s a Dark Tower poster coming soon from Mondo, but that’s based on older content from pre-retirement Struzan already. As for what Struzan will be creating, that’s a mystery.

But who wouldn’t want a framed version of a Struzan take on Lord of the Rings, The Dark Knight, The Avengers or Anchorman? I’ve got an original poster of Indiana Jones and the kingdom of the crystal skull rolled up and stored away, and despite my loathing of that film, the Struzan masterpiece is the one positive aspect of it.

So, which movie property would you like to see Struzan take a crack at for Mondo?

    All hail Drew Struzhan. We are not worthy.

    I own quite a fair number of the Star Wars expanded universe novels, and while some of them are utter trash, at least I know that they have a Drew Struzhan cover I can turn to when the excrement on the pages get too much to bear.
