Tom Cruise is a busy man. He’s just done working fans of the source material into a raging frenzy with Jack Reacher, wrapped up filming on Joseph Kosinski’s new sci-fi epic, Oblivion, and is currently learning the very expensive lesson that trying to get your wife to join a kooky cult based on some science fiction of their own, is a very bad idea.

But he won’t have much time to stop and catch his breath though, as he’s about to die. A lot.

After being stuck in limbo for ages, Warner Bros has finally green lit the Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr and Mrs Smith) directed science fiction film and Cruise has just landed in London to start the prep work for what is undoubtedly going to be a rather expansive and expensive production.

The movie is based on a 2004 Japanese novel of the same name by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, and it sounds very interesting, mixing a bit of Groundhog Day with some Starship Troopers:

There’s one thing worse than dying. It’s coming back to do it again and again… When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield in his first sortie, only to find himself reborn each morning on the day before his death, to fight and die again and again. On the 158th iteration though, he sees something different, something out of place: the female soldier known as the Bitch of War. Is the Bitch the key to Keiji’s escape, or to his final death?

Brad Pitt was actually up for this role originally but had to pull out due to schedule conflicts, leaving the way open for Cruise. And while both men are undoubtedly talented, it is weird that this role was not offered to a much younger actor, as everything I’ve seen about the source material indicates a much younger protagonist. Then again, Cruise certainly does not look his 50 years of age (Go thetans!) so maybe he can pull this off believably.

Cruise will be joined in the film by Emily Blunt, who will probably play the “Bitch” female soldier who also appears to be stuck in some type of mysterious time loop.
