Yeah, yeah. Not exactly ground breaking news, is it? Ever since The Avengers handed Marvel/Disney a licence to start printing money, many people just assumed that Whedon would be returning, despite his non-committal mutterings. So the news that he’l be shepherding the next big movie comes as no surprise.

What is surprising though, is that before then, Whedon will be doing something else for Marvel. Something that will be taking him back to his TV roots.

Remember, that news about Marvel and ABC developing a live-action TV drama series based in the Marvel cinematic universe? Well, none other than Whedon himself has been put in charge of developing and producing it.

Both bits of news was revealed to the public during Disney’s annual earnings call to their investors. What wasn’t revealed though, was what this TV series would be all about. You may recall my idea for S.H.I.E.L.D. series, and it’s still my first choice, but with just a few tweaks. Firstly, make this the Maria Hill show. In the right hands, she’s an incredibly capable character that can stand shoulder to shoulder with Marvel’s pantheon. And when it comes to strong, independent females who need to hold their own against much more powerful male co-stars, hands don’t get more righter than Whedon’s. Besides, one of these days that disembodied voice will finally (I, hope and pray) reveal to his kids how he met their mother, at which point Colbie Smulders is going to be in need of a job.

We don’t know how the new Marvel short, Item 47 – which will be released on the Avengers Blu-Ray – will end yet, but if her character survives, bring Lizzy Caplan into the fold. From what we’ve seen in the short snippets of revealed footage, she’s already almost a Whedon girl, if you know what I mean. Make her a S.H.I.E.L.D. recruit with some special conditions, and she could be our “in”. Also, I kind of think she’s hot.

That’s not the only idea though. Veteran comic writer and head of Marvel’s TV division, Jeph Loeb, revealed some time back that Mockingbird, Alias aka Jessica Jones and Cloak and Dagger TV series pitches had all been in some stage of development. Out of the lot, Alias gets my vote. The story of an ex-superhero turned private eye who investigates superpowered crimes would be a great fit, not just because it gives Whedon another strong female lead, but because it has an episodic, case by case nature and would be fairly grounded, and thus not require that big a budget, both of which would help its chances of being made immensely. Also, it would allow for a multitude of cameos and guest stars that could help to introduce some not-so-well known characters, like Jessica Jones’ husband Luke Cage and his crime-fighting partner Danny Rand aka Iron Fist, to the non-comic book crowd.

Whatever concept Whedon eventually settles on though, I’m just happy that he’s finally returning to the medium that got him democratically elected as our Supreme Geek Overlord.

  1. Awesome! Whedon is the man. Any idea on story line for the new Avengers though?

Well Whedon has previously said that if he does come back, he would dial down the scope a bit and make it a much smaller and character driven film.

I don’t see how that will work though, seeing as it’s almost a certainty that Thanos will be the main bad guy and he is anything but small scale. It’s also been hinted at that Guardians of the Galaxy will be set in the future and that at some point the team will be travelling back in time, and probably interacting with the Avengers. Whether that happens in the GotG movie or Avengers 2 is not sure.

Hopefully this TV show doesn’t randomly get cancelled for no reason. But I didn’t see Fox’s name anywhere, so we might be okay…
