Unproduced Stanley Kubrick scripts are headed to TV

When director Stanley Kubrick died several years ago, he left quite a few projects uncompleted, while several of his abused actors from previous projects started taking tap-dancing lessons for when they eventually visited his grave (citation needed).

Some of his work survived though, snapped up by Philco Films, a company that his son-in-law, Phillip Hobbs created with Steve Lanning. They’ve got plans for those scripts, and one of them includes transferring them to TV.

Deadline says that one of the projects under consideration, Downslope, is “an epic Civil War drama following the activities of Confederate Army Colonel John S. Mosby and his plot to settle the score after Custer captures and hangs several of his men”, while the other, God Fearing Man “tells the true story of Canadian minister Herbert Emerson Wilson who became one of the best safe-crackers and most successful bank robbers in America in the early 20thcentury.”

Television may be interested in adapting those properties, but they’re going to need some people to do so, of which there are none yet. Still, the TV landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, with more high budget, upscale productions filtering through.

Kubrick may not be lending his signature style or actor abuse to his last script and testament, but it’ll be interesting to see the results of his work, nonetheless.

This should be interesting. Television has never been in a better state for the right type of genius – it’s actually a pity that Kubrick isn’t still alive to take advantage of it. If I just think about what Michael Mann and Martin Scorcese accomplished with Luck and Boardwalk Empire respectively…
