Henry Cavill, that impossibly handsome and muscled real-life superhero that is also big ol’ goofy gaming geek, may just be about to break the internet. Cavill is currently busy shooting the second season of Netflix’s hugely successful videogame adaptation The Witcher, and shared a pic on Instagram of him getting his hair and make-up done for the show. It’s not the actor’s appearance as the titular Geralt of Riva that’s caught everybody’s attention though, but rather what Cavill is holding in his hand. The pic shows him holding a page filled with text which has been blurred out, with a caption that reads “Secret project? Or just a handful of paper with random words on it?…Guess you’ll have to wait and see.”
Well, no. We won’t wait, thank you very much. That’s because the ingenious folks over at GamePressure ran the pic through Focus Magic, a piece of software that unblurs text, and found some rather startling results. Once deciphered, the text clearly contains the words “Cerberus”, “Reaper”, “Geth”, and “Tali’Zorah”. And if you’re a fan of Mass Effect you would be going crazy right now.
For the uninitiated, all those words are either the names of characters or races in Bioware’s massively popular and critically acclaimed space opera RPG trilogy. Now the first thought would be that this is maybe something to do with the recently announced new Mass Effect game that’s currently in development. Maybe Cavill is voicing a character in the upcoming title?
However, GamePressure went one step further and searched for all the words that they could make out and found that Cavill was seemingly reading an excerpt from the Wikipedia entry for Mass Effect 3! Spoiler warnings for anybody who has yet to play that game as this description is from around its mid-point before lead character Shepherd sets off to search for the Crucible.
Following the events on Tuchanka and a failed coup by Cerberus to take over the Citadel, the quarians offer their support to the Alliance if Shepard helps them reclaim their homeworld, Rannoch, from the geth. Assisted by a quarian, either Tali’Zorah or Admiral Daro’Xen, Shepard boards a geth dreadnought and rescues a captive geth unit, either Legion or a facsimile occupied by a geth virtual intelligence (VI), then disables the Reaper control signal over the geth.
So what does all of this mean? We don’t know. The Mass Effect Legendary Edition, a remastered version of the original trilogy, is set to release in May, so maybe Cavill is involved in some marketing? Or maybe, just maybe, that deal signed between EA Games, Legendary Pictures, and Warner Bros. waaaaaay back in 2010 to adapt Mass Effect to the big screen by following the plot of the original games is finally happening and Cavill just let the cat out of the bag? Hoo boy, be still my beating geeky heart!
