Amber Heard and Shiloh Fernandez are in a sticky situation in this trailer for SYRUP

Firstly, just to get the formalities out of the way, this trailer has not been released officially yet, but since author/screenwriter Max “Maxx” Barry went and uploaded this teaser for his “dark satire” tale, I think it’s fair game.

While Shiloh Fernandez may soon be defecating all over your memories in the Evil Dead remake, he still has a rather mysterious Scarlett Johanssen lookalike in the form of Amber Heard to deal with first, as well as a scheming friend who may/may not have setup this femme fatale to ruin his life. Also energy drinks. Or something. It’s kind of hard to tell from this trailer, truth be told, but it does look pretty slick.

An adaptation of the Max “Maxx” Barry novel, a dark satire that is described as follows:

“The average person has three million-dollar ideas per year. Scat, an unemployed marketing graduate who knows you don’t get noticed calling yourself Michael, has had his first. It’s a sure-fire ticket to the life of shallow fame and fleeting celebrity he craves. But first he has to deal with 6, who is possibly the love of Scat’s life or possibly ripping him off, and Sneaky Pete, marketing genius, refugee from Tokyo, and Scat’s best friend—as far as Scat knows.”

While Fernandez impressed me about as much as mould on cheese in Red Riding Hood (though that could have had something to do with how horrible everything else in that movie was. Not even Gary Oldman could save it), Heard has been putting together a steady list of solid performances since her debut in 2006’s All the Boys Love Mandy Lane.

And while I haven’t read any of Barry’s previous novels, he’s a pretty highly regarded scribe with a heavy black comedy leaning, so hopefully he has this stray away from just the destructive love story angle and into the whole tongue in cheek “selling an image” territory that the trailer alludes to, in which case this film could be a pretty interesting watch as well.

Just a note: A statuesque blonde in skin-tight dresses, ruby red lips and heels, who calls herself 6? All the Battlestar Galactica geeks just messed their pants in reverie.
