Wait, what? PROMETHEUS and BLADE RUNNER possibly set in the same universe?

Despite my misgivings about some aspects of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the home release as there appears to be a ton of extras for Behind The Scenes freaks like me (As in I freak out about Behind The Scenes specials, not that I’m a freak behind the scenes) as well as many cool easter eggs to discover.

Well, one such easter egg has just been discovered by ScreenCrush and it’s a doozy. It’s just a series of text messages that apparently was sent by Guy Pearce’s Prometheus character, Peter Weyland. However, it’s his description of his mentor that may just ring a bell with anybody that’s very familiar with Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic piece of sci-fi, Blade Runner.

The line that reads “That’s how he ran his corporation, like a God on top of a pyramid overlooking a city of angels,” should immediately remind any serious Blade Runner fans of Eldon Tyrell, CEO of the Tyrell Company. Tyrell literally lived/worked in a pyramid on top of a skyscraper in future Los Angeles i.e. the City of Angels. The “replicants” that Tyrell produced in the film, were also not “simple robotics” like Weyland’s androids, but genetically engineered synthetic beings with false implanted memories.

This may just be a random Easter Egg thrown in by Scott as some fan service, but based on the fact that in terms of the two film’s timelines, there is just a 70 year gap between Blade Runner and Prometheus, then it’s not that far fetched that the two are related. It’s also a little bit too on the nose to just be a meaningless, throwaway set of lines.

One of the reasons that a comparatively young Guy Pearce was picked to play the ancient Peter Weyland (you know, besides just to get a laugh from you for his horrible make-up) was so that Ridley Scott could use the actor to play a much younger version in potential spinoffs. And while no such spinoffs have yet been announced, could we perhaps be seeing a Peter Weyland cameo in the Blade Runner sequel that was announced earlier in the year?

Sure, why not. We should invent a game called “Connect Ridley Scott’s movies to each other.”

Urgh, I’ve lost a great deal of respect for Scott after that ‘more plot holes than a pasta sieve’ of a movie… Sigh.

I thought you guys knew? Maximus is the great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, greeaaaaat grandfather of Weyland, and Ripley is a clone of both Thelma and Louise.
